This is a comprehensive guide to campus resources and services available to students over the spring academic break from Saturday, March 9 to Sunday, March 17, 2024.

During the spring break, Reed College is open during normal business hours (Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm). Inclement weather, unexpected college closures, or vacation schedules may affect routine office and department staffing and hours. College delays and closures will be posted on the Reed mainpage

Campus Departments & Services


Reed College is open during normal business hours (Monday–Friday from 9am–5pm) during the spring break. Staff and faculty may take vacation during the break, so some offices may have reduced services. Inclement weather, vacation, and illness may also affect otherwise scheduled office and department staffing and hours. College delays and closures due to inclement weather will be posted on the
Reed mainpage. Students are encouraged to call or email to set up an appointment whenever possible. 

If a student is experiencing illness or flu-like symptoms, they may wish to request a phone meeting with staff and faculty to prevent the spread of illness. 

Academic Support: Students may access the DoJo via swipe-card from 9am to 5pm on days the college is open. No tutoring or workshops are available over the break; however staff may be available for individual appointments as schedules permit. See the Academic Support webpage for links to book a meeting and staff contact information. Please feel free to reach out!

Athletics, Fitness & Outdoor Programs: Hours of operation for the Sports Center will be 7am-7pm Monday through Friday only starting March 11th-15th, with no weekend hours. Normal hours resume March 18th for business. Pool hours will be from 11am-2pm Monday through Friday. Bookstore: The Reed College Bookstore and Homer's Hut Spring Break 2023 hours:

March 11-12:  Bookstore 12pm to 5pm and Homer's Hut 5pm to midnight

March 13-17: Bookstore 9am to 5pm and Homer's Hut 5pm to midnight

March 18th: Bookstore 12pm to 5pm and Homer's Hut 5pm to midnight

March 19th: Normal hours resume (Bookstore 12pm to 5pm and Homer's Hut 5pm to 2am)

Business Office: The Business Office remains open during the break on days the college is open, with limited staffing. Please refer to the Business Office website for more information.

Center for Life Beyond Reed: CLBR will remain open during spring break for appointments! Schedule time with us via Handshake to work on your resume, cover letter, grad school application, career or fellowship plans, and more. Peer Career Advisors will not be available during spring break. Visit our Youtube page to review our Senior Bootcamp playlist, which covers the basics of developing your resume, cover letter, networking skills, LinkedIn and more.

Prexy common spaces will remain open during business hours Monday - Friday.

Contacting CLBR: Students are welcome to contact our office directly at beyondreed@reed.edu. We typically are able to answer emails within 24 hours via this email address.

Community Safety: Community Safety is open 24 hours a day, including weekends and days the college is closed. CSOs are available to assist with safety and security issues, including medical emergencies and lockouts. Call 503/517-5355 or text 503/849-8678 for assistance.

Computing User Services (CUS): Please find information here or contact CUS directly with questions.

Disability & Accessibility Resources: DAR staff will be available for scheduled appointments during the break. You can make an appointment by using DAR’s online booking system. DAR staff are also available via email at dar@reed.edu and will respond during business hours.

Facilities: Maintenance staff are available and on-call during the break for on-campus facilities issues. For non-urgent maintenance issues, fill out an online maintenance request. For urgent maintenance issues (e.g. broken pipe, no heat), call Facilities (503-777-7283) during business hours or Community Safety (503-517-5355) after hours and on days the college is closed.

Financial Aid: The office will be open during normal business hours on days the college is open. Staff are available for questions and advising via phone at 503-777-7223, email, and in-person appointments in Eliot 202 over the break. 

Health & Counseling Center: The HCC will be open during the break on weekdays from 9am to 5pm (closed from 12pm to 1pm for lunch). 

Counseling Services will be closed on Wednesday March 13, 2024, but Medical Services will remain open. Students can also talk with a free and confidential counselor by calling the Reed After Hours Counseling Line at 866-432-1224, available 24 hours a day. For medical advice after hours, students can call the Community Nurse Advice Careline at 800-214-4469. Additional counseling and medical support resources are listed under Safety & Support Resources.  

International Student Services: International Student Services staff are available to students for in-person, phone or virtual appointments. Students can find appointment times/modes here.

ISS will host an OPT Workshop and Dinner on Wednesday, March 13 from 7:00-8:30pm. 

Library: The Library, PARC and IMC are open with reduced hours during Spring break; hours of operation are posted here. Remote reference assistance is available during open hours via the Ask a Librarian webpage. 

Mail Room: The Mail Room is open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm throughout break.

Multicultural Resource Center: The Student Center is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm on days the college is open. Student spaces are open for student group use over break.

Registrar’s Office:  The Registrar’s Office will be open normal hours during Spring Break: Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

Residence Life: The Residence Life Office in 28 West is open during business hours, Monday - Friday, on days the college is open. Some HAs and ACs may be on vacation, but support is available through the main Residence Life office. 

Restorative Practices: Cameron Tanner is available during regular business hours on days the College is open. Honor Council is not active during the break but will be available again when classes resume after spring break.

SEEDS (Students for Education, Equity and Direct Service): The Student Center is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm on days the college is open. Visit SEEDS’s website or email seeds@reed.edu for more information

Sexual Health, Advocacy, & Relationship Education (SHARE): Program Director and Certified Advocate L. Mattson is available during normal business hours for support services. Students can request a meeting through the Advocacy Contact Form or by emailing mattsonl@reed.edu

SHARE Package orders will be delayed over Spring Break, with orders set to be filled starting on 3/18/24.

Student Engagement: The Student Engagement office is closed on Monday, March 11, and open 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Friday of spring break. Please stop by the Student Center or email student-engagement@reed.edu if you need assistance. 

The Student Life Office: The Student Life Office in Eliot 218 is available for academic support and resource advising during the break from 8:30am to 5:00pm. To make an appointment with a Student Life dean, please refer to this guide (or you may contact 503-517-7396 or student-life@reed.edu). 

Student Work Office: Student Work Coordinator Kat Buckspan is available over the break for students seeking guidance on on-campus work or work study positions. Students can make an appointment with Kat at studentwork@reed.edu.

The Reed College Guide to Multicultural Portland: The Reed College Guide to Multicultural Portland is designed to provide Reedies with a starting point for exploring Portland. The guide includes information about local restaurants, spiritual and faith centers, community and cultural organizations, salons and barbershops, and arts and attractions!

Portland Events: Spring break is an excellent time to explore the greater Portland area! Learn about upcoming local events via Travel Portland's Event Calendar or PDX Pipeline's Event Calendar.

Safety and Support Resources

Emergency housing: Students who find their housing (whether on- or off-campus) unsafe or inhabitable should call Community Safety (503-517-5355) to request use of a temporary on-campus emergency room. Rooms are available for short-term use (no more than 72 hours); a member of the Care Team can assist students in making a plan if longer term housing is needed. Contact Vanessa Guerrero at vguerrero@reed.edu for long-term housing solutions over the break. 

Sexual violence & relationship abuse support: Program Director and Certified Advocate L. Mattson is available during normal business hours for support services. Students can request a meeting through the Advocacy Contact Form or by emailing mattsonl@reed.edu. Financial assistance: Emergency loan funds serve students who are experiencing a short-term financial hardship. These emergency loans are typically limited to $500 or less and must be repaid by the end of the semester in which the loan is made. Students can request an emergency loan through the Business Office. Additional emergency financial assistance can be requested by contacting Kat Buckspan.

The Reed Care Team: The Care Team seeks to proactively coordinate resources and support for students who may be experiencing personal or academic issues that interfere with their ability to be successful at the college. Anyone can refer a student to the Care Team via the online care referral form. Referrals are reviewed during normal business hours and are not monitored after hours, on weekends, or days the college is closed.

Warm and rain clothing: Students who need warm clothing can look at donated clothing items in the warm clothing drive bins around campus (including in the Student Center and by the GCCs), or rent at no cost jackets, raincoats, layers, gloves, and hats from the Backpack Co-Op.

Emergency Mental Health Care

Cascadia Urgent Behavioral Health Walk-In Clinic: Mental health emergencies and crisis support, including emergency medication refills. Open Mondays–Sundays from 7am to 10:30pm. 4212 SE Division Street, Suite 100, Portland. 

Cedar Hills Hospital: Short term inpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment; outpatient services include day treatment and intensive outpatient care. Call 503-844-5000 to set up an intake appointment or present in-person. Available 24 hours a day. 10300 SW Eastridge St, Portland. 

Crisis Assessment and Treatment Center (CATC): Mental health respite center for acute mental health crises for individuals who are on the Oregon Health Plan or who are uninsured. Stays can range 1 to 7 days on average; all stays are voluntary. Available 24 hours a day. Call direct at 503-232-1099, or call the Multnomah County Crisis Line at 503/988-4888 if the direct line is busy. 30 NE MLK Blvd., Portland. 

Adventist Emotional Wellness Center: Intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization program for acute mental health crisis. Open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30am to 5pm and Fridays from 8:30am to 4pm. Call 503-261-5953 to access. 10101 SE Main Street, Portland.

Crisis and mental health support lines

Reed Counseling Hotline: Students can talk with a free and confidential licensed counselor by calling 866-432-1224. Available 24 hours a day.

Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 to connect to a trained crisis counselor. Available 24 hours a day.

Multnomah County Mental Health Crisis: Mental health crisis support and access to Project Respond, a mobile crisis counselor program to help facilitate access to psychiatric inpatient hospital care. Call 503-988-4888 for consultation. Available 24 hours a day.

Call to Safety: Crisis support, follow-up advocacy, in-person medical advocacy, and support groups for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Call 503-235-5333 (available 24 hours a day) or text 503-235-5333 (available Monday–Fridays from 11am to 3pm). 

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for students and loved ones. Call 1-800-273-TALK or use the chat feature on their website. Available 24 hours a day.

The Trevor Project LGBTQ Suicide Hotline: A crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline for LBGTQ+ youth and young adults. Call 866-488-7386 (available 24 hours a day) or text START to 678678 (available 7 days a week from 12pm to 7pm PST).

Lines for Life: Lines for Life is a regional non-profit dedicated to preventing substance abuse and suicide. Call 800-273-8255 or text 273TALK to 8398631. Available 24 hours a day.
