Resources for Off-Campus Students

No matter where you choose to live, we want you to feel at home at Reed!

Students who reside off-campus often face different challenges than on-campus residing students, such as managing a daily commute, balancing home and academic responsibilities, and connecting to the broader campus community. Reed offers multiple resources to help off-campus students make the most of their college experience.

Transportation

Students can reach Reed's campus via foot, bike, public transit, or personal vehicle. Visit Campus Transportation for more information about transportation options, campus parking, and bike storage.

TriMet Honored Citizen Pass

Students who qualify and sign up for TriMet's Honored Citizen Bus Pass will have the cost of a monthly pass fully covered by Reed! Visit TriMet Honored Citizen Bus Passes to learn more about eligibility and how to apply.

The Reed Night Bus

The Night Bus is a shuttle service that helps students who live off-campus get home safely at night. Hours of operation and shuttle boundary information can be found on the Community Safety Services webpage.

Carpool Match

Looking for carpool partners? Metro offers a free carpool match website.

Campus Life

Social engagement

The Office for Student Engagement helps students build meaningful connections to one another and the broader Reed community. The student engagement office supports student-run organizations and coordinates on- and off-campus entertainment and educational events. Visit Reed's Events Calendar to learn more about on-campus events.

Campus spaces

Off-campus students needing a space to study or relax between classes can visit the library (note new hours, capacity limits, and community expectations). In addition, the furniture in lounge and lobby spaces will be reset to allow for appropriate distancing; these areas remain open to commuter students needing a place to go between classes.

Please visit Student Spaces to learn what spaces are open and available to students for social gatherings and relaxing between classes (e.g. Student Union).

Campus Computer Labs

Campus computer labs (the IRCs in the ETC and public workstations in the Library) are currently closed to walk-up traffic. College licensed software has been loaded onto virtual computers, ready for your use!

Dining & Meal Options

Campus Dining

Students who live off-campus are welcome to use Reed's on-campus dining and cafe options. Students are welcome to use the self-service microwaves in Commons during open hours to heat up their personal meals.

Commuter Commons Cash

Off-campus students, staff or faculty may purchase Commuter Commons Cash at any time during the semester at the cashier’s window in Eliot. Commuter Commons Cash does not expire until the cardholder leaves Reed. A 10% bonus is added to all Commuter Commons Cash purchases by Bon Appetit.

The Reed Community Pantry

The Reed Community Pantry provides nonperishable food items, toiletries, hygiene products, clothing, books, and more at no cost to members of the Reed community. The RCP is open during the hours posted on their website or by arrangement by contacting seeds@reed.edu.

Lockers

Visit the Student Engagement Storage Space Rentals webpage to learn more about storage options available to individual students and registered student groups.

    Computer Labs

Campus computer labs (the IRCs in the ETC and public workstations in the Library) are currently closed to walk-up traffic. College licensed software has been loaded onto virtual computers, ready for your use!

Resources found in the library catalog and on the library databases page are already configured for off-campus access. Visit Library Off-Campus Access for tips on accessing other electronic materials when off-campus.

    Safety Resources

All students - regardless if they live on- or off-campus - have access to support and safety resources at the college. Please see the Student Hub for a list of important campus resources. Highlighted below are resources particularly salient to students living off-campus:

    Reed After Hours On-Call Team

The Reed After Hours On-Call Team provides after hours emergency consultation and assistance to students. The on-call team is available to Reed community members seven days a week whenever Reed offices are closed (typically weekdays after 5 p.m. and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays). The on-call team is not a substitute for emergency personnel such as 911.

Students living off-campus can reach the Reed After Hours Emergency Team by calling Community Safety at 503-788-6666. When you call Community Safety, give your name, describe the situation, and provide your contact information. Community Safety will then connect you with an on-call team member for assistance.

    Community Safety

Community Safety Officers are available to students 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. CSOs provide community services such as safety escorts and vehicle jump-starts in campus parking lots. CSOs can intake crime reports and respond to on-campus emergencies in coordination with the Student Life Office and local emergency services as necessary. Students experiencing emergencies off-campus should call 911 or local emergency services directly for assistance.

    Emergency Housing

Students who find their housing (whether on- or off-campus) unsafe or inhabitable can call Community Safety (503-517-5355) to request use of a temporary on-campus emergency room. Two rooms are available for short-term use (typically 72 hours or less).

    Support Resources

The Student Support office can help students connect to financial, medical and mental health, food and housing security, and other important resources on-campus and in the broader Reed community. Students needing assistance can contact the Care Team at careteam@reed.edu or by calling 503-517-7396.

    Contact

If you have questions or suggestons about the resources listed in this guide, please contact Student Life at student-life@reed.edu or 503-571-7396.
