Dean of the Faculty

Welcome to Reed's Office of the Dean of the Faculty

Mathematics and Statistics

Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics

The Reed College Mathematics and Statistics Department invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professorship in mathematics, to begin in August 2026. Applicants should have completed their PhD dissertation in mathematics or applied mathematics by the time of appointment. Applicants from all areas of mathematics are welcome to apply, but we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in analysis. An Equal Opportunity Employer, Reed values diversity and encourages applications from underrepresented groups.

Applications must be submitted through the MathJobs.org website (https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/27915) and should include:

  • a cover letter addressing how your teaching and scholarship are suited to the liberal arts college environment,
  • a curriculum vitae,
  • a teaching statement,
  • a research statement, including ideas for potential senior thesis projects,
  • three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses teaching.

Please disclose any use of generative AI in the process of preparing your materials.

We are seeking candidates who are committed to teaching students from a wide variety of backgrounds and who have a strong research program that can engage undergraduates. The successful candidate is expected to teach the equivalent of five semester courses over the academic year and to supervise senior theses. The senior thesis is a cornerstone of the Reed College academic experience. It is a year-long project, required of each student, which culminates in a written document and an oral defense. Applicants are encouraged to supply their ideas for thesis projects and to describe their past experience mentoring student research.

Reed College is a highly selective liberal arts institution with a distinguished record of educational accomplishment and a strong commitment to scholarship (http://web.reed.edu). It is also a community that values cultural diversity and inclusive educational practices as essential to the excellence of our academic program. In your application material, we invite you to describe how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and/or community service reflect these values. Reed is committed to non-discrimination and equal opportunity employment.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but they should be received by March 1, 2026 to guarantee full consideration.  Any questions may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Luda Korobenko, at korobenko@reed.edu.

Deadline

March 1, 2026 to guarantee full consideration

Background Check Requirement

A criminal conviction record check is required for all college staff positions as a condition of employment for selected candidates. Employment offers are contingent upon the successful completion of this background check. A conviction does not automatically disqualify a candidate; each case is reviewed based on the nature of the conviction and its relevance to the responsibilities of the position.

Visa Petition Information

Reed is committed to hiring faculty members who are excellent teachers-scholars. To the extent allowed or required by law, Reed has historically petitioned for faculty members’ employment-based visas, including H-1B visas. However, given the recently announced significant employer fee increase to $100,000 for certain H-1B visa applications, Reed is not currently able to petition for employees for those visa applications that are subject to that fee increase. Reed will evaluate other requests on a case-by-case basis and will reconsider the newly increased fees for H-1B filings, as well as future changes that may be announced, as new information becomes available. Prospective candidates should contact the dean of the faculty (koleson@reed.edu) to discuss status and fees.
