Computing
At Reed, computers are available for student use in central computing, specialized labs, classrooms, and the library. High-speed network ports are available across campus, including in residence hall rooms, and wireless network coverage is extensive.
A variety of site-licensed software is available for student use, and the computer help desk, staffed by students and professionals, is open daily.

Mail Services & Contacting New Reedies
Mail Services

After we receive the student list with your name on it, mail services will send you an email. The email will contain your Reed mailbox number and the combination to open your mailbox.
When you arrive on campus, you should visit mail services, find your mailbox, and open it.
If you do not get our email, you can ask for your box number and combination at the mail services window.
If you have shipped belongings to Reed, you will get an email notification and a package slip will be put in your mailbox for each item shipped. Get the package slips from your box and bring them to the service window to pick up your packages. If you have too much to carry, mail services has hand trucks available for loan.

Note: Always use the designation “MS” (mail stop). Our mail receptacles are not “P.O. Boxes” or “Boxes.” They are mail stops. Your mail may be misdirected by USPS if designations other than “MS” are used. This is important to remember when you open a bank account. If, for some reason, you cannot access your mail stop number at shipping time, write “new student” in the second line of the address.
Always keep your mailbox door locked to deter theft. After you check your mail, close the door and twirl the dials to lock it.
All Reedies have at least two Reed email addresses. Both go to the same inbox. One is based on the full name (usually first.last@reed.edu, unless there is a conflict). The other is based on the network username (username@reed.edu). Either will work in any combination of uppercase and lowercase letters. You will be assigned an email address when you activate your computer account by following the instructions on the personalized letter you receive about accessing IRIS.
Getting Around Portland
There are many ways to travel around our city—some are even self-propelled.
Cars and other vehicles on campus
If you bring a car to Reed, please park only in the college's parking lots. Parking on the Reed campus is free, but students must register their vehicles with community safety. Per Oregon state law, motorcycle and moped users are required to wear helmets.
Bikes on campus
Bikes are an inexpensive, reliable, and effective way to get around campus and greater Portland. Note that even an honorable community like Reed’s is not immune to crime, and bike theft is a problem on campus. If you bring a bike to campus or purchase one once you arrive in town, bring or purchase a reliable lock, preferably a U-lock, rather than a cable lock (which can be cut easily). If you are an avid bike rider with a high-end bike, you might consider buying an inexpensive bike for short trips and for parking on campus. Regardless, you should check with your insurance carrier about bicycle coverage and register your bike with community safety. Don't forget to pack your helmet.
Oregon law requires you to use lights after dark. For bike advice and maintenance, try the student-run bike co-op. Members can help you keep your bike in good repair and even teach you how to do it yourself. Best of all, their services are free!
Public transportation
TriMet is Portland’s network of buses and light rail trains. Students can save up to 50 percent on the cost of monthly TriMet passes at the cashier’s window in Eliot Hall. You can even charge your pass to your Reed account. TriMet schedules are available outside the cashier’s window; from the switchboard in 28 West; and in the bookstore, which also has route maps. TriMet provides bicycle transport and offers bike lockers at some stations.
ZipCar
ZipCar is the leading national company for car sharing, and it provides 24/7 access to cars parked right on campus. This is an excellent alternative to the hassle and expense of owning your own vehicle. Several cars are located on campus. You can simply reserve a car online, let yourself in with your ZipCard, and drive. The hourly and daily rental rates always include gas and insurance.
Banks & ATMs
A US Bank ATM is available on the lower level of Gray Campus Center. Be aware of the fees if you’re not a US Bank customer. In addition, Wells Fargo, Chase, Key Bank, US Bank, and OnPoint and Advantis credit unions can all be found in the Woodstock neighborhood, a short walk from campus.
