Birding Reed

Instructor: Gary Granger

Each class will be a two-hour walkabout on the Reed campus focusing on birds. Classes will be held Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00 a.m.* After a brief meeting indoor meeting to discuss the day’s focus, classes will take place almost exclusively outdoors, “rain or shine.” Students will walk both in a class group and individually, depending on the specific focus of each session with the instructor available during the entire class time.

A key component of class will be learning to integrate intentional movement practices that minimize disruption to birds with knowledge of bird habitats, recognition of bird calls and songs, and visual identification of birds.

Birding will take place almost exclusively outdoors and on all areas of the campus. Students will be expected to be capable of being outdoors regardless of the weather (excepting severe or hazardous conditions).

The instructor will discuss current methods of identifying birds and documenting birding activity using both manual (e.g., bird identification book, notebook, etc.) and technological platforms.
