Description: Medical Assist - other
Location: Residence Hall

Notes: A CSO responded to a request for medical assistance in a residence hall. The CSO met with a student who was feeling unwell after taking their medication. The CSO offered to request paramedic assistance and EMS was called. Once EMS determined the student would be alright, they departed and the CSO gave the student a medical hotline card should their condition suddenly worsen.

Notes: CSOs on patrol near the sports field found two students smoking. When asked, they confirmed that it was cannabis and cooperated when asked to relinquish the drugs.

Notes: A CSO responded to a student who had reported their bag and wallet stolen. The CSO recommended to the student that they file a report with Portland PD and to contact Community Safety should their possessions be returned.

Notes: A CSO responded to a report of a student carrying a distributable amount of alcohol. After locating the student and determining that the student was over the legal drinking age, but that they were in fact carrying a distributable amount of alcohol, the CSO confiscated the four one-gallon containers which all contained a mixture of alcohol and non-alcoholic beverage. The CSO advised the student that the containers would be stored at 28 West until the student could come pick them up later in the evening with the agreed upon understanding that the student would then remove them from campus. The student did retrieve the containers from 28 West later in the evening.

Notes: The CS director on patrol south of ODB noticed two people smoking with a noticeable odor of cannabis. The CSO asked if they were Reed students. Both individuals informed the CSO that they were guests and could not reach their host. The CSO asked for ID, and saw one of them with a Reed ID. That individual then confirmed they were in fact a student. The CSO confiscated the cannabis joint and continued on their patrol.

Notes: The CS director on patrol at the thesis bonfire saw a student smoking a substance that had the odor of cannabis. Upon approaching the student, the student confirmed that the item was a cannabis joint. The student extinguished the joint and the CSO continued on their patrol.

Location: Front Lawn

Notes: The CS director on patrol near ODB smelled cannabis smoke and saw three students passing between them what appeared to be a joint. Upon approaching the group, the director observed, lying in the grass near one of the students, a black plastic container known to commonly contain cannabis flower. The container was open and appeared to be full of cannabis. When the director requested the student hand him the container, the student placed it in a backpack and relayed that it had cost “a lot” of money and that they planned to keep it. The director requested to see the students’ id cards, and none of the students initially complied. After a second request, the students did produce their ID cards. The student in possession of the container full of cannabis then took the cannabis out of their backpack and tossed it into the grass so that the director could confiscate and dispose of it.

Notes: A CSO on patrol south of ODB noted the smell of cannabis coming from the vicinity of a student that appeared to be smoking. Upon confirming with the student that the student was smoking a cannabis joint, the CSO reminded the student of Reed’s policy on cannabis use and the joint was quickly disposed of.

Notes: A CSO on patrol at the front lawn noted an individual exhaling a large cloud of smoke that the CSO recognized as cannabis. When asked if they were a student, they informed the CSO they were not. The individual then left campus without incident.

Notes: A CSO on patrol in the GCC saw two students using a fentanyl testing kit. The students stated they were testing a small amount of a substance for their friend. The CSO alerted them that students were not to bring illicit drugs onto campus and that the testing kits were intended to be taken and used elsewhere. The student stated that they understood and confirmed that they were not in the possession of any amount of illicit substances more than was required to perform the test.

Location: Residence Hall

Notes: A CSO responded to a request for a welfare check in a residence hall. The student had drank a few beers at the beer garden and called Community Safety when they began to feel unwell and wanted to confirm they were not experiencing a medical emergency. The CSO assessed the student for alcohol and other drug overdose emergencies and confirmed that the student should be fine after some sleep.

Notes: A CSO on patrol heard yelling near Eliot Circle. The CSO called for additional assistance and a White Bird team, the group approached the individual and after a brief verbal interaction the individual left campus.

Notes: A CSO on patrol near the front lawn found an unattended cannabis joint. The CSO disposed of the joint.

Notes: Two students refused to leave the Beer Garden once it closed. After a verbal altercation, CSOs were told to disengage and the Director of Student Engagement was contacted to reinforce the expectations of event organizers.

Notes: While attending to an unlock near central campus, a CSO smelled cannabis and approached a nearby student who was smoking. The student confirmed it was cannabis, the CSO confiscated the joint and resumed the initial call.

Location: Amphitheater 

Notes: A CSO on patrol near the amphitheater noticed a group of individuals passing a small object between them and smoking from it. The CSO asked if the group was smoking cannabis, to which they denied. The CSO then informed them that they had seen the paraphernalia and noted the odor of cannabis. The group, that the CSO confirmed was comprised of students and alumni, then confirmed that they were smoking cannabis. The CSO confiscated and disposed of the remainder of the cannabis joint.

Notes: A CSO on patrol in the quad noticed a student smoking something with the odor of cannabis. The student confirmed that the substance was cannabis and extinguished the remainder of the cannabis joint. The CSO additionally noticed a bottle of alcohol and asked if the student was 21. The student confirmed that they were, but when asked for their ID the student informed the CSO that they did not have it on them. Upon looking up their ID number the CSO found that the student was not 21 and the alcohol was confiscated.

Notes: Two CSOs on patrol near the amphitheater noticed a group of students sharing what appeared to be a joint. When asked, they confirmed it was cannabis. The students apologized and the cannabis was disposed of.

Location: Residence Hall

Notes: The CS Director was informed of a possible drinking game taking place in the Foster/Scholz common room. Upon approaching the building, the director was able to observe through the large windows, a game commonly known as “beer pong” being played by multiple students. When the director entered the area, he observed a student moving two large bottles from off of the counter to the floor. When the director initially asked if the students were drinking alcohol, he did not get a direct answer. When the director asked the student with the plastic containers what they contained, he did not get a direct answer. When the director relayed that he had observed the student moving the containers out of view, the student then confirmed that they contained alcohol. When asked again, some students then disclosed they were under 21 and drinking the alcohol. The alcohol was discarded and the director resumed his duties.

Notes: While on patrol, a CSO saw a car parked on the front lawn. It was confirmed to be a student’s vehicle, the student was contacted and the vehicle moved without incident.

Location: Gray Campus Center

Notes: A CSO on patrol in the quad noted the odor of cannabis. They followed the odor to three individuals seated at a nearby picnic table. Two of the individuals confirmed that they were not members of the community and the third was an individual with whom the CSO recognized from an interaction earlier in the evening. The CSO informed the individuals of campus guidelines regarding cannabis use and then disposed of the remainder of the cannabis.

Notes: A CSO on patrol in the quad saw a student attempt to hide a can that had a label indicating it contained alcohol. Upon approach, the student confirmed that it was an alcoholic beverage. The CSO asked if the student was 21 and they stated that they were, however when checking the student’s ID it was confirmed that the student was not 21, and the alcohol was discarded.

These responses are always collected anonymously with the option for the responder to leave contact information if they would like for a member of Community Safety management to contact them, and are used internally for departmental performance tracking. Community Safety has opted to publish these survey results for transparency and community accountability. *Names and pronouns mentioned in survey responses will be redacted to protect the privacy of individuals.
