The Center for Life Beyond Reed

2023 Fellowships and Awards Results

Congratulations to Reed student and alumni recipients of national award competitions!

Reed congratulates Daniela Buchillon-Almeida '25 and Jennifer Hadawi '24, who have both been selected for Critical Language Scholarships this summer. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an immersive summer opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America's engagement with the world.

We're excited for all of our Fulbright U.S. Student Program finalists. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. These students and alumni were offered Fulbright English Teaching Assistant awards for the 2023–2024 award cycle: Alisa Chen '21 (Taiwan), Sylvan Domst '23 (Germany), Flora Gladwin '23 (Spain), and Odette Jennings '23 (Germany). Monroe Stephenson '23 was also selected for a Fulbright Study/Research Grant in Germany.

Reed College is also proud of Alec DeContreras '23 and Khalil Laltoo '23, who have been awarded a 2023 Projects for Peace grant for their application as a team. Their project is titled "Food Security Through Decentralized Neighborhood Farming" and will take place here in the United States.

This year's awardees are Gabriela Bailey '20 in chemistry, Tobias Janssen '19 in bioinformatics, Clayton Szczech '00 in sociology, Meredith Theus '21 in ecology, and James Vesto '21 in chemistry. Honorable mentions go to Rachel Fox '15, Hannah Meier '21, Annapurna Post-Leon '20, Cameron Roberts '19, and Andrew Zhao '22.

We're thrilled for Ashlee Fox '19, who was announced as one of twenty people selected as the 2022 class of Samvid Scholars. The Samvid Scholars program was established in 2021 for graduate students who display an ongoing commitment to driving transformative change for society. Ashlee is the first Reedie to be selected as a Samvid Scholar.

Congratulations to Max VanLandschoot '23, who was selected as a member of the eighth class of Schwarzman Scholars. Max is the first Reedie to be selected as a Schwarzman Scholar, and will be attending a fully funded, one-year master’s degree and leadership program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

We'd also like to congratulate our two Sperling Studentship recipients, Jesse Cao '23 and Bhavana Panchumarthi '23, who have both received funding for one year master's programs at the University of Cambridge. The Sperling Studentship was endowed by John Sperling '48 and is available to fund at least one alum or recent graduate each year who is accepted to postgraduate study at King's College at the University of Cambridge in England.

Stephanie Gee '20 was selected as a Watson fellow in spring of 2020, but has had to defer her award since then due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic. We're excited to announce that she is finally able to begin her Watson year this fall to explore global health through research and photography in Japan, Bhutan, Thailand, New Zealand, Ghana, and Switzerland.
