Mike Brody, vice president & dean of student services, provides an update on student services and the resources available to your student:

Dear Reed parents and families,

I have heard from many members of the Reed community over the past few weeks, and I have certainly noticed myself, that campus feels particularly buoyant this fall. Students seem to be making meaningful connections with each other, with their faculty, and with their studies. “Only at Reed” conversations abound—I have heard students discussing homunculi and Hum, current events and culinary preferences, internships and the intricacies of navigating interpersonal space. The library is thriving with quiet activity, and Frisbees continue to fly around the quad, rain or shine.

As your students settle in to their new home at Reed, we continue to pay careful attention to how they’re doing. We are truly enjoying our interactions with them and we remain committed to providing meaningful ways to support and enrich their educational experience. Please read on to learn about some of our many student services programs, and as always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or commendations.

The residence halls will remain open and staffed during fall break (October 19–27), during which there will be limited food service. Many students stay at Reed during the break and student activities, SEEDS, outdoor programs, and the multicultural resource center all sponsor trips around Oregon during the week. In addition, house advisors offer in-hall events.

Residence Life Blog & Facebook
Students and parents/guardians can “like” us on Facebook to receive regular updates on campus events, housing deadlines, and other residence life happenings. Our blog includes weekly off-campus activities, advice for residents, House Advisors post about floor events, neat facts about Portland, photos, and much more! Find us on facebook and wordpress.

Upcoming Leadership and Employment Opportunity: House Advisors
The house advisor (HA) hiring process for the 2014–15 academic year is already on our radar, and we hope it’s on your student’s too! Being a house advisor is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop strong leadership and mediation skills, make a positive impact on campus community, and be an integral member of the residence life team in shaping policies and procedures. Additionally, HAs receive employer-provided housing and the “B” meal plan for the 2014–15 academic year. A detailed timeline of our hiring process will be available in November. Being an HA is a great way to connect with the Reed experience, so encourage your Reedie to look into this excellent opportunity!

We recognize that Thanksgiving is a very important holiday for many Reed families. Classes that regularly meet on Wednesdays throughout the fall semester will generally be scheduled to convene on November 27, and we regret that this will likely make it difficult for some students to get home for the holiday.  We encourage students to discuss their circumstances with their individual faculty, each of whom will determine his or her own expectations regarding class attendance that week. For students who opt to stay on campus, as some do each year, there are various options for sharing a meal in the company of other members of the Reed community. From what we hear, while there is no place like home this tends to be a great experience. We’ll make sure that relevant information is available for students as Thanksgiving approaches.

From Dayspring Mattole in the Multicultural Resource Center

The 2013–14 Peer Mentor Program (PMP) supports 47 students by providing one-on-one peer mentorship and community-building events throughout the year. Two student coordinators facilitate the program with assistance from the program coordinator at the multicultural resource center (MRC). This year, 32 new students and 15 returning student mentors are participating in the program. PMP is open to all Reed students and focuses on providing support to first-generation students and students from underrepresented communities.

Prior to orientation week in August, PMP students attended a four-day Odyssey that included a walking tour of Portland's historic Old Town district, volunteering together at the Oregon Food Bank, a steamboat tour of the beautiful Columbia Gorge, dinner at some of Portland's famous food carts, and a variety of workshops, activities, and reflection on what it means to both join and flourish in the Reed community.

From Kristin Holmberg in Student Activities:

The student activities staff has been busy welcoming new students to campus. We have been working with our student clubs to get them up and running and to plan their events for the year.

We are in the process of recruiting for our second Reed Leadership Academy cohort. In our first year, we met weekly with 20 students to talk about identity, values, communication, conflict and decision-making skills, and how to make a positive impact on our communities. In order to translate some of this theory to practice, students are paired with professionals in the community for our "leaders coaching leaders" program, and the group completes a community service project.

The Gray Fund calendar this fall features Carl Bernstein, the investigative journalist who broke the Watergate scandal. Trip highlights include hot air balloon and skydiving trips, as well as trips to the opera, ballet, a drag race, and hands on creation of an object in an industrial workshop.

From Julie Maxfield in Academic Support:

Academic support services is always busy at the beginning of the school year. This September, we've been training tutors, introducing new students to our services, collaborating with faculty on workshops and other programming, talking about Gilgamesh, and generally getting everyone up and running. Whether your student is new to Reed or entering the home stretch, academic support can help make it a successful year.

Academic support provides resources to help students meet the challenges of a Reed education. Our robust peer-tutoring program offers the opportunity to collaborate with fellow students who are a few steps ahead on their academic path. Individual academic coaching by professional staff gives students a chance to develop goals and improve the skills needed for college success. An ever evolving set of quantitative and study-skills workshops creates an awareness of how other students have overcome similar obstacles. The writing center assists in the elusive pursuit of clear communication. Finally, our setting—the Dorothy Johansen House—provides a cooperative space for students to journey together in the pursuit of what the mission describes as the goal of the Reed education: "to learn and demonstrate rigor and independence in their habits of thought, inquiry and expression."

From Meredith Dickinson in Students for Education, Empowerment, and Direct Service (SEEDS):

digging_canyonStudents for Education, Empowerment, and Direct Service (SEEDS), as many of you know, is Reed's community service program. This semester, our ongoing service programs offer a variety of one-day service projects, such as environmental service Saturdays and blood drives, ongoing service commitments, such as mentoring and tutoring, as well as service trips and a number of on-campus educational events. Our committed site partnerships continue with weekly mentoring and tutoring opportunities at Lane Middle School (LASER program), Kateri Park apartments, Hosford Middle School (Eye to Eye program), as well as on-campus tutoring with Friends of the Children. The Voz Worker's Rights Education project also continues this year, providing writing lab and English language tutoring in line with the needs of Spanish speaking day laborers. Spring semester brings the annual alternative spring break service trip. This academic year we plan to expand to two trips, one in San Francisco, California, and one in Oregon. These trips will combine service, learning, and fun. SEEDS also continues to collaborate with other Reed departments on programs to engage our community, such as Reed Leadership Academy, where SEEDS will be supporting the program's community service component. Additionally, SEEDS will once again collaborate with the multicultural resource center (MRC) on the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which brings students from eight area colleges and universities together for a common day of service. As always, students can check the SEEDS website for details, to sign up for programs, and/or to join the SEEDS mailing list or Facebook page. From Dana Lawson in International Student Services (ISS):

In August, International Student Services (ISS) welcomed our largest and most diverse class of international students to Reed in our history. Thirty-eight degree seeking students, 11 exchange international students, and several US citizens living abroad joined our community from more than 25 countries. We are excited about the unique perspectives, experiences, and cultures that our international students bring to campus and are thrilled to welcome them to the Reed community!  

Highlights of the upcoming semester include the continuation of our Discover PDX program, where international students venture off campus and into the city of Portland and its environs. Our first adventure will lead students on a hike in the Columbia River Gorge and out for lunch in our city. We are also looking forward to the annual Seattle fall break trip.

We have started recruitment for our International Student Advisory Board for this year and look forward to the great events, celebrations, and conversations that this group of international students will bring to campus. If your student is looking to get involved, please encourage him or her to ask about or join our board and contribute to the celebration of international diversity at on campus.

We also look forward to this time of supporting and helping new students as they navigate life in the US and at Reed. Academic support, career services info sessions, and social opportunities are aimed to help students learn more about life on campus beyond campus and meet their peers. From Ron Albertson and staff in the Center for Life Beyond Reed:

"Career Services" is now The Center for Life Beyond Reed. The Center for Life Beyond Reed collaborates with students and a far-reaching community of partners in order to help students pursue and develop creative, productive, fulfilling, and socially responsible lives at Reed and after graduation. The staff at the center guide students and new alumni to take ownership of their personal and career development. Through their work with the center, students will explore their interests and values; learn about opportunities in a wide variety of career fields; shine in the use of what they have learned through their formal studies and experiences beyond the curriculum; and engage with and thrive in the global marketplace through meaningful work.

Our office has recently reorganized to recognize an expanded mission of not only helping students plan for a life of meaningful work after Reed, but also helping students make the most of opportunities for service, learning, and exploration outside the classroom during and after their time at Reed. In line with this new emphasis, the Students for Education, Empowerment, and Direct Service (SEEDS) office and the staff support for fellowships and awards have moved to Greywood to join the center in the hope that a closer physical and institutional relationship between the different offices will enable students to more effectively and efficiently avail themselves of resources and make more of the opportunities each offers.

Here is a note from Brooke Hunter, assistant director for strategic partnerships in the center, that features a couple of these programs: the Reed College Winter Break Externships and the Reed College Internship Advantage Initiative.

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to sponsor a Reed winter externship and also to those who volunteered to host students in their homes. Thanks to parental support, we have so far tripled the number of externships that we are offering this winter. We have signed up 36 sponsors so far, with more in the queue. Those 36 externships represent opportunities for 60 students. Additionally, we have 18 places for students to stay during externships and in some cases during summer internships. Having more parents engaged in helping create opportunities for current Reed students deepens our offerings and magnifies the worlds students are able to touch when they step beyond Reed.

We next turn our recruiting energies to the Reed Summer Internship Advantage Initiative, recruiting for-profit companies to which Reedies may apply for ten-week summer internships. Let us know if you have ideas for great places that might want to employ a Reedie this summer. We ask that the workplace pay a minimum of $10/hour and create a project that lasts ideally 10 weeks.

Bookstore Offerings

Here at the Reed bookstore, we've caught our breath from the "big race" to get ready for the school year. Homer's, our late-night convenience store, is in full swing for your hungry night owls and fall merchandise is arriving.

The bookstore is a nonprofit, institutionally owned store, and we offer many goods and services to support your students' well being. One of our most popular services is the care box program. Our packages are designed with your Reedie in mind and are a way to celebrate a birthday away from home or to say "hang in there—we're thinking of you." Financial Aid Process

Keep an eye on our website in the coming months for complete instructions on the financial aid application process for the 2014–15 academic year.

As always, parents and students can use estimated income information to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CSS Profile. Families will again be required to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update the FAFSA once tax returns have been filed; therefore, we encourage families to file 2013 IRS income tax returns as early as possible. Parents and students who are unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool may order a tax return transcript online at

The application cycle begins on January 1, 2014, and the deadline for priority consideration ends on May 1, 2014. If you have any questions regarding your Reedie’s

Save the Date for Commencement

Reed's 100th annual commencement ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014 on the front lawn of campus. Weekend events include optional tours on Saturday and Sunday, and a commencement-eve celebration Sunday evening. A complete schedule will be available in February online. Please join us in celebrating the class of 2014!
