Sustainability at Reed

Swap Shop

Visit the Swap Shop to refresh your wardrobe, find school supplies, and other usable items donated by Reedies at the end of the year. Everything in the Shop is free, and open to all Reed community members. The Swap Shop is located in the GCC basement, past the Community Pantry.

Reuse at Reed

The Swap Shop was born out of a pretty spectacular partnership with the Office of Student Engagement, Sustainability, the Office of Institutional Diversity, Facilities Services, and Residence Life in 2022. Over the summer, a student sustainability intern (funded through the Social Justice Education and Research Fund) sorts, washes, and organizes donations collected during student move-out in May. Clothing in good condition either goes to the Swap Shop for Reed community members, or to Rahab's Sisters or Rose Haven day shelters. Household items, furniture, and bedding goes to Community Warehouse to support Portland community members who are moving into permanent housing. Finally, scrap items (ripped, stained) are brought to H&M to be recycled. Stained towels and blankets are currently brought to the Humane Society.

All visitors to the Shop are asked to weigh the items they take so we can track the total weight of items diverted from the landfill. In the first two months of the Swap Shop, we diverted over 1,000lbs of clothing and smaller items! We also cleaned and found new homes for 10 mini-fridges, 35 full-length mirrors, and over a dozen lamps.

Swap Shop Hours (2023-24):
