Reed supports academic research related to sustainability through coursework in the environmental studies program as well as through field research conducted in the canyon for a variety of classes and independent projects.
An academic focus on environmental studies allows students to combine study in biology, chemistry, economics, history, or political science with interdisciplinary work on environmental themes across the natural sciences, history, and social sciences.

The Reed canyon, a 28-acre watershed that runs through the heart of the campus, provides easily accessible populations of insects, fish, birds, and mammals for use in teaching and research on biodiversity. Students tackling significant problems like global warming and loss of biodiversity have turned to the canyon for their thesis research.
