Greetings Reed Community,

I am thrilled to share the exciting news that, following a successful search, Christy Martin, M.S., has been appointed as our next Title IX and 504 coordinator.

Christy (she/her) has over 17 years of professional experience in higher education, including over a year at Reed as the Director of Academic Support; she has made significant contributions to Student Affairs. Her diverse background encompasses directing disability services, managing Title IX investigations and coordination, overseeing Care and Behavioral Intervention teams, collaborating closely with faculty on academic inclusion, leading orientation programs, shaping institutional policy, and managing housing operations and residence life.

Christy's extensive experience has reinforced her belief in the interconnected nature of our institutional work. She places a special emphasis on fostering collaboration and building trust, approaching leadership with authenticity, curiosity, and care. Christy holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from Portland State University and is currently in the dissertation phase of her Ed.D. through Oregon State.

Beyond her professional achievements, Christy enjoys board games, exploring the Portland food scene, traveling, and watching shows (currently Fargo). She resides in Southeast Portland with her partner, two children, roommates, roommate’s cats, and her son's rarely-seen-gecko named Beans.

Christy will officially assume her new role on February 7, 2024. However, as mentioned in November, we will continue working with Grand River Solutions (GRS) during the transition period. Molly O’Malley is currently the interim Title IX and 504 coordinator and will continue in that role until Christy is fully transitioned. Should you need to contact Molly, you can reach her at omalley@reed.edu or titleix@reed.edu.

I extend my gratitude to the members of the search committee for their diligence:

Kathy Oleson, Dean of the Faculty and Professor of Psychology
Chris Toutain, Martha A. Darling, Dean of Students
Heather Quinn-Barron, Director of Human Resources
Cathy Carrington, Associate to the Vice President for Student Life

I also want to thank the students, staff, and faculty who actively engaged in the process, offering valuable feedback on all the candidates. Your involvement was instrumental.

Regards,

Karnell McConnell-Black, Ed.D.
Vice President for Student Life
