Navigating Introductory Course Options in Psychology

Important Info

  • PSY 101 Foundations in Psychological Science is the first course in our new introductory psychology sequence. Recommendations for the second course in the sequence differ for majors and non-majors.
  • PSY 200 labs count as Data Collection & Analysis for Group III requirements
  • During the 4-year transition, any of the following will satisfy the intro requirements for PSY majors:
    • PSY 121 and PSY 122
    • PSY 121 OR PSY 122 AND any other course in the department excluding PSY 201-209
    • PSY 101 and PSY 200 (4 modules, 0.25 units each = 1 unit)

First Course: PSY 101: Foundations in Psychological Science Lecture (1 unit)

  • Pre-requisite: none
  • Must take Lecture (T/TH)
  • Must take one Concept Lab (M or W or F)
  • Must take one Applied Lab (M or W or F)
  • Concept and Applied Lab must be taken on the same day
  • When signing up for Concept Lab, you will have two Applied Lab options to choose from that same day (e.g. Monday Concept Lab; Applied Lab Monday either 12-12:50 or 1:00-1:50)
  • Note: 48 spots have been reserved for incoming freshman, leaving 48 spots for continuing students

Second Course Options for Potential Psychology or Neuroscience Majors

PSY 200: Psychological Science Labs (must take four labs to total 1 unit)

  1. Pre-requisite: PSY 101 or currently enrolled in PSY 101
  2. Lab modules to choose from: PSY 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 208, 209
  3. Each lab module is offered twice in a given semester, meets once a week for 80 minutes, and is 0.25 units
  4. Students must sign up for either 2 (0.5 units) or 4 (1 unit) lab modules in a given semester
  5. If signing up for 2 different lab sections: take 1 in the first half of the semester, take 1 in the second half of the semester
  6. If signing up for 4 different lab sections, take 2 in the first half of the semester, take 2 in the second half of the semester
  7. Students cannot sign up for 2 in the first half of the semester and 0 in the second half of the semester

Second Course Options for Non-majors

Any other 200 level Psychology course or 300 level Psychology course that has no pre-req except for PSY 101

  1. PSY 200 labs are NOT recommended
  2. 200 level courses to choose from: PSY 217, 222, 225, 232, 296
  3. 300 level courses to choose from: PSY 319, 322, 323, 324, 330, 333*, 334, 336, 344, 350, 351, 361*, 364, 366*, 373*, 374, 381*, 392, 393                                                                                                                        Please note: *meets the Data Collection and Analysis Group III Requirement
