Office for Institutional Diversity

Our Programs and Initiatives

The Office for Institutional Diversity works across all campus constituencies and focuses on the following areas:

Faculty and Staff Recruitment: OID works with faculty, academic departments, and Human Resources to develop strategies to recruit, hire, and support diverse faculty and staff. OID supports search committees on inclusive search practices.

The dean for institutional diversity is actively involved in the Liberal Arts Diversity Officers (LADO) Consortium, a consortium of liberal arts diversity officers whose mission is to promote best practices and innovative strategies in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. One function of LADO is to strengthen the pipeline between underrepresented graduate students and faculty positions at liberal arts colleges.

The New Scholars Series program provides academic departments the opportunity to bring newly minted PhD and ABD scholars from underrepresented groups to campus. This program introduces Reed students and faculty to emerging scholars while also introducing Reed's extraordinary academic program to a diverse cross-section of new scholars. The goal of this program is to complement an academic department's curricular offerings, introduce Reed students to distinctive ideas and scholarship in their fields of study, and bring to Reed some of the country's most exciting, thought-provoking emerging scholars. Additionally, new scholars have the opportunity to check out Reed, learn more about our academic program, and consider us for future permanent faculty positions.

Faculty and Staff Development and Support: OID provides staff and faculty opportunities to connect and participate in workshops and professional development. OID oversees the Center for Teaching and Learning which directs the Student Consultant Program and offers workshops for faculty to improve their pedagogy and teaching. OID facilitates a series of on-going Inclusive Practice Workshops, and provides faculty and staff the opportunity to attend and participate in other professional development conferences/opportunities. OID hosts a monthly luncheon for faculty and staff of color to connect, network, and build community. To find our more ways we support faculty and staff development, contact us at institutional.diversity@reed.edu.

Student Recruitment and Retention: OID works closely with Admissions and Student Life staff to develop strategies to recruit, support, and retain historically underrepresented students. OID also works closely with Student Life staff to assess the needs of underrepresented or underserved students and communities to develop programs and services to address these needs. OID participates in Spring Symposium and Sophomores Rising and hosts a graduation reception for first-generation college students during commencement.

Community Engagement: OID provides opportunities for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and intersecting communities to engage in meaningful conversations meant to inspire the further development of a fully inclusive community through our signature events, special programming, and workshops. OID strives to deepen relationships in the broader community by partnering with organizations and local schools and maintaining active involvement in regional and national professional organizations and consortiums.
