Minoring in Linguistics

The goal of the Linguistics minor is to allow non-majors to demonstrate their interest in Linguistics, recognizing any student who has gone above and beyond the 2-unit minimum needed to apply Linguistics towards the Group II requirement.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the field and the multiple ways in which the scientific study of human language interfaces with other disciplines offered at Reed, students can pursue different possible concentrations within Linguistics according to their interests. Potential ‘tracks’ within the minor could include:

  • Linguistics 211 and 212, plus any 3 additional courses of interest in Linguistics
  • Linguistics 211 + 4 courses in areas of formal analysis (Phonetics and Phonology, and/or Syntax and Semantics)
  • Linguistics 212 + 4 courses on Sociolinguistic topics.

Students interested in minoring in Linguistics should feel free to contact any member of the Linguistics department for more information.

Requirements for the Minor

  1. Five courses in Linguistics
  2. At least one of these five courses must be Linguistics 211 or 212.
