Study Abroad Opportunities

Reed College offers several opportunities to study the Russian language abroad, in cities where it is widely spoken. 

Year- or Semester-long Programs

Tallinn University in Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn University is a public research university in Estonia. Located in the heart of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, Tallinn University consists of six connected buildings, each with a Latin name: Terra, Astra, Mare, Nova, Silva, and Vita. Between the buildings lies a campus courtyard. The University's Academic Library is located a short walk from the main campus. Learn more about the program.

Tallinn University has a student population of around 7,000 students: 4,000 undergraduates, and 3,000 postgraduate (13% international), 116 study programs, 968 full-time employees (17% international). 

American University of Central Asia (AUCA-Bard) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

The Bard-AUCA study abroad program offers intellectually adventurous students a unique opportunity to study side by side, in English or Russian, with peers from 25 different countries at the region’s most prestigious university. Students interested in anthropology, Central Asian studies, political science, Soviet studies, or Russian and Central Asian languages will find an exciting and rigorous liberal arts curriculum that develops students’ skills and cultural aptitude, both of which will foster sensitivity to the region’s rich traditions, as well as an adaptability to its democratic development. Bishkek is the largest and capital city of the Kyrgyz Republic. With a population of almost 1 million people, it is a vibrant city. Just outside the city, there are a number of natural wonders like Issyk Kul Lake and Ala Archa National Park. 

Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan

The American Councils' Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) provides intensive, immersion-based language instruction in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Hosted by Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), this program provides approximately 20 hours per week of in-class instruction in Russian grammar, phonetics, conversation, and cultural studies for a semester, summer, or academic year. Participants also complete coursework in the history and culture of Kazakhstan and may elect to enroll in Kazakh language study. Learn more about the program.

Almaty, Kazakhstan is the Soviet-era capital and largest city in Kazakhstan. It is still the cultural center of the nation. Simultaneously post-Soviet and very modern, the city of 2.2 million people offers a fascinating international experience. 

Summer Study Abroad Programs 

Summer study abroad programs are not covered by financial aid, and they should be approved by the faculty so that academic credit can be transferred. Additional need-based funding for summer study may be available through study abroad programs and through the competitive Jane Burbank Fellowship.
