Room & Roommate Choices for First-year Students
Room assignments are determined by your choices in the Housing Portal and availability of rooms on campus. We work hard to take into account your preferences and to find you the most compatible roommate(s).
In addition to considering your selected preferences, we try to place students from different regions of the country and world together and to maintain a gender balance on coed floors. In the first week of August, you will be notified by email of your room assignment and given the name of your roommate(s), along with information about where to check in when you arrive on campus.
First-year students are typically assigned to double or triple rooms with other first-year students. A limited number of single rooms are available for first-year students. Priority for single room assignments will be given to those first-year students who notify us that they:
- are older than the rest of the incoming class,
- have a documented health condition that warrants the privacy of a single room,
- or identify as trans* or gender non-conforming.
Housing preferences include specific buildings and communities. Before you select preferences in the portal, please visit our residence halls page for more details on buildings, and be sure to look at some of the following living options:
All of Reed's residence halls are mixed class year and gender inclusive/coed. Residents of each community determine how to utilize common spaces (including bathrooms) at the beginning of each year.
If you would like to request a specific roommate, complete the "roommate preference" section of the housing preference form. You and your proposed roommate must request each other in order to be assigned as roommates.
