Stata Help

The "in" Suffix

The "in" suffix is another way to restrict the data Stata uses to perform its analyses by specifying ranges using Stata's case values (where the first line of data is equivalent to observation 1). Before using this option, make sure you know how your data are sorted.

Ranges are denoted using / with a number on either side. For example, to list the first five cases, the command would be list gpa in f/5 Stata uses the lower or upper case "f" to denote the first case and the lower or uppercase "l" to denote the last case. The first can also be referred to as "1" and the last case as "-1".

You can use this suffix after sort to look at a subset of the highest or lowest data for a given value.
