Subject: Conflict in the Middle East

October 9, 2023

Dear Reed faculty and staff,

As many of you know, violence has erupted again in Israel and Gaza, with devastating consequences. News sources are reporting that more than 1,500 people have been killed and more than 5,000 people have been injured.

Many Reed faculty, staff, and students have family, friends, and loved ones in the region, and many have lost people close to them or know others who have. We ask that you treat each other and your students with even more care than you usually express. If you are able to grant yourselves, each other, and your students some flexibility on deadlines and expectations this week, we know the consideration would be appreciated.

Reed College offers free counseling services through Canopy EAP. You can find more information here. Also, students can access counseling services through the Health & Counseling Center.

This is a particularly difficult time for many in our community. We thank you for your kindness, empathy, and care.

Sincerely,

Audrey Bilger
President
