The Mary Barnard Student Poetry Contest
A $100 prize is endowed by Reed College in honor of Mary Barnard for the best poem or group of poems submitted by a Reed undergraduate. Mary Barnard (1909-2001), a Reed graduate (class of 1932), was a renowned poet and writer, and a translator of classical literature, including the following fragment from Sappho:
"Although they are
only breath, words
which I command
are immortal."
The Aliki Perroti and Seth Frank Most Promising Young Poet Award of $1,000 will be open to winners of the current year’s Academy of American Poets Prizes from across the country who are twenty-three years old or younger. Submissions are judged by one of the past or current members of the Academy’s Board of Chancellors.
