Storage 101

Over the years on-campus student storage has been increasingly utilized. Due to this fact, we can no longer guarantee storage space for every student. Spaces are assigned on a first come - first serve basis, so it is important to plan ahead. Please see the on-campus storage guidelines below and contact Residence Life if you have any questions.

How to Receive a Storage Space:

Students will need to visit the Residence Life office in 28 West to acquire storage labels and receive a storage space assignment from a Resident Director. While at the Residence Life office, students will be given information on storage availability, where to purchase boxes, and what times storage rooms are open to drop off boxes. The Residence Life office will be open for storage assignments during the following times:

Monday, April 29 - Friday, May 3 from 8:30 AM – 12 PM
Monday, May 6 - Friday, May 10 from 8:30 AM – 12 PM

Standardized Box

  • Students will be allowed to store 4 boxes
  • Boxes must be one standard size: 24x24x12.
  • Students can purchase boxes from Reed Bookstore, where standard-sized boxes will be available for purchase.
  • Students can resuse these boxes from year to year to save money.

Mini-Fridges

  • Students will also be able to store one mini-fridge in one row of cages in the Sequoia storage room.
  • Students must request a fridge space when they get their storage assignment and they must label the mini-fridge with an official Residence Life storage label.
  • Mini-fridges do not count towards the 4 box limit

How to get your boxes

You will be able to purchase the standard Residence Life Storage box from the Campus Bookstore for $4.25 each. The Bookstore will have these boxes available for purchase starting April 30th. You should consider reusing your boxes as you continue here at Reed to save yourself money! Remember, these are the only boxes that may be stored. Students will also be able to store one mini-fridge in the Grove, and may request that when they get their storage assignment.

FAQs

Can I store furniture? Residence Life will not store furniture, rugs, etc. Items such as lamps will need to fit into the standard box to be stored.

Can my friend drop off my boxes to storage? Sure, they can bring them to storage as long as they are properly packed and labeled, and deposited in the assigned storage space.

What is a standardize box size? The only boxes accepted into storage are 24x24x12 and can be purchased at the bookstore for a nominal fee. These boxes can be reused during your tenure at Reed.

Can I store things if I am studying abroad? Yes, you are allowed to store items in storage while abroad. Please communicate with your Resident Director about your plans.

Can I store things if I am graduating?  Nope, storage can only be used if you are enrolled or a continuing student for next year. All of your belongings must be removed from Reed storage by the time you graduate.

How can I get my old stuff out of storage? Come with your Reed ID to your storage room during posted storage hours and tell the HA or staff member you will be removing your boxes. If you don't remember where you box is, contact your RD and they will be able to tell you.

Terms and Conditions of Storage Use

How long can my stuff stay in storage?

  • Storage assignments are valid for up to two years, and they are only available for enrolled Reed students.
  • This means that your storage space will expire two years after you put your stuff in storage, or once you are no longer enrolled at Reed (whichever comes first).
  • When your storage expiration date is approaching, you have two options:
    • You can retrieve your items from storage (during approved storage hours) prior to your storage expiration date.
    • Or, you can renew your storage assignment. You must follow standard procedures for registering for a storage space through Reed Residence Life.

What happens if I leave my stuff in storage after my assignment has expired?
  • Any items that remain in an expired storage space will be disposed of and/or donated to a local charitable organization.
  • Prior to disposing of your items, we will make one attempt to notify you via email, using the current email address listed for you in IRIS. If we don’t hear back from you within the timeframe specified in the email, your stuff will be disposed of and/or donated.

What if I can’t make it back to campus to get my stuff?
  • If you’re still an enrolled Reed student, we can arrange to have your boxes shipped to the address you provided to us when you registered for storage. The shipping charges will be charged to your student account and you will be responsible for all shipping costs. We will not open boxes to check the contents of the box or re-pack your items. We cannot be held liable for any losses or damages that occur to your items.
  • If you are no longer an enrolled student, we will not ship your items. You are responsible for retrieving your items in person. Or, you can appoint a designee to come grab your stuff, as long as you give us their name ahead of time and they make an appointment with us to access the storage room.

Storage Hours during the Year

Hours for storage during the Fall and Spring semesters will be set at the onset of next academic year. Storage labels will be available for at the Residence Life desk in 28 West. We will only accept the standard-size box, purchased from the bookstore, in any of our storage spaces.  See information above for move-in/move-out hours.
