Michael Leidecker Psy. D., Associate Dean of Residence Life
Hello from the Northwest!
Thanks for taking the time to explore our corner of the Reed website. As the Associate Dean of Residence Life, I work closely with the Dean's Office, Community Safety, and Health & Counseling to create quality living-learning communities conducive to the academic and personal development of each student. In addition, I supervise the Residence Life, Student Activities, SEEDS, and Bon Appetit/Food Services departments. Together we all strive to support student needs while providing a healthy and safe environment that is conducive to student success and learning.
My background is in counseling. I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University, and a B.A. in Public Relations from Central Washington University. I have traveled a great deal both personally and professionally working for AFS Intercultural Programs, Japanese Ship for World Youth, and Up With People.
I love all out door life including skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and am an Oregon Mazama. When I am not representing Res. Life, I am spending time with my large extended family, my partner Trevor, and our two wonderful dogs, Chase and Henry.
Drop by and say hi in our new Residence Life office @ 28 West.
Serilda Summers, Assistant Dean of Residence Life

Hi there! My name is Serilda Summers and I am the Assistant Dean of Residence Life. In my position I supervise RDs, manage housing upkeep and logistics and bring sunshine to the team, which is my modest attempt at countering the infamous NW grey!! My educational background is as follows: Grand Valley State University graduate with a B.S in Behavioral Science and Biology and an M.Ed in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education from Ball State University located in Indiana. I look forward, this year, to gaining more experience in my new position of Assistant Dean, as well as traveling and pursing other personal interests!
Resident Directors
Working to assist the house advisers in everything they do are six resident directors (RDs). RDs are full-time professional staff members who work and live on campus. RD's provide support for the house advisers, are advocates for students concerns, and help students experiencing difficulties at Reed. They provide emergency on-call coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week when school is in session.
Xi Xia, Interim Director of Housing, RD for Wimbledon Apartments
If you are wondering how to say my name, it is pronounced "Sha She". Xi sounds like "She" and Xia like "Sha". I was born in China and Chinese names start with your family name and then your non-family name. So Xia is my family name and I am called by my whole name, Xia Xi. This is my fourth year at Reed and recently became the Interim Director of Housing. I went to school at the University of Illinois and took classes in a variety of discplines. After graduate school, I came out to Portland, the West coast for that matter, for the first time and begun my adventure at Reed. It has been an incredibly growing experience! In my free time, I am either playing Ultimate, thinking about Ultimate, training for Ultimate, or spending time with my girlfriend(who plays Ultimate).Amy Frey, RD for Northside
Hi! My name is Amy and I am the resident director for Naito and Sullivan Halls. I grew up in upstate New York (way upstate near the Canadian border) and went to school at St. Lawrence University where I graduated with a degree in Sociology and Psychology. After graduation, I moved to Delaware and served a year in AmeriCorps working with mentoring programs in public schools. I decided to stay in Delaware and earned my Masters in College Counseling from the University of Delaware. This is my first time living on the west coast and I am looking forward to making Reed and Portland home!
David Rivera, RD for Archipelago
Hello from Reed! My name is David and I’m the Resident Director of the Archipelago area group, which is comprised of the RCA and Birchwood apartments, the Garden House, the Farm House, and the five Language Houses (Chinese, French, German, Spanish, and Russian). In addition to serving as the RD for these diverse living communities, I work with international students as my collateral area assignment. This is my second year at Reed and I continue to enjoy its unique and lively culture, wonderful community, and talented student body. I'm originally from Puerto Rico—and lived there during childhood—but spent my teenage and undergrad years in Florida. Following undergrad at the University of Florida (Go Gators!), I attended grad school at Tufts University in Boston, where I received a Master of Arts in Teaching. I subsequently served as an RD at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and after two years there, decided to head west. Fortunately, I found a home at this funky little college in Portland and I'm truly enjoying the experience. In my spare time, I like to read, work out, travel, and explore Portland on foot.
Gabe Merrell, RD for ODB/Anna Mann & Foster, Scholz, MacNaughton
Hello! My name is Gabe and I'm the RD for ODB & Anna Mann. During Spring Semester I will also be the RD for Foster, Scholz & MacNaughton. This is my first year at Reed and I'm really excited to get to know all about Reed and Portland. I lived in Seattle for the past two years, where I worked as an RD at the University of Washington. Before UW, I earned an M.S. in Higher Education from the University of Kansas, and a B.S. in Psychology from Indiana University. Originally I'm from a small town just south of Indianapolis, Indiana. I'm definitely a Hoosier and love all things IU, but have found a home in the amazing Pacific Northwest. I really enjoy music and listen to as much as I can. I also love Indie films, spending time with friends, cooking, exploring the great food in Portland and anything outdoors. I look forward to getting to know you, stop by and say hi sometime!
