Johnny Powell | Molecular Biophysics PHYS 363

From Volkenstein's book Molecular Biophysics

"It may seem that if a physcist approached a biological problem, he would make discoveries relatively quickly because his ideas and methods are very powerful. The actual situation is quite different. The complexity of biological objects and phenomena hinders the formulation of physical problems, which is possible only as a result of deep biological investigation. Therefore, work in the field of biophysics requires a great deal from an investigator; this is inevitable at the interface of sciences. A biophysicist is a physicist possessing broad biological erudition, who is also able to formulate and solve physical problems. Biological erudition implies more than knowledge of special fields of biology bearing directly on the question at hand ... One who is alien to living nature (say zoology) does not understand biology. The knowledge of those fundamentals of biology that are sometimes looked upon disparagingly by physicists forms the biological Weltanschauung without which no genuine biohphysics can be constructed."
