Lab of Linguistics

The Lab of Linguistics (LoL) is the home of the linguistics department on campus. Housed in Eliot 101D, the lab is a space to gather, collaborate, support each other, get help with problem sets, conduct research, and borrow equipment.

Drop By

For the Spring 2026 semester, the LoL's drop-in hours are Tuesdays from 1:00-2:30pm, and more to be determined soon. Drop-in hours are a great time to come in and ask linguistics questions, collaborate on classwork, borrow and return equipment, get trained on recording practices, software, and equipment. You're also welcome to come in whenever the door's open :)

Book an Appointment

Outside of drop-in hours, and for recording in the LoL, you can book an appointment.  For the Spring 2026 semester, you can book an appointment with Wren at https://calendar.app.google/34x4nfLbPwAgW7Q27

If none of the times on the bookable calendar work for you, feel free to email us at laboflinguistics@reed.edu, and we can probably work something out :)

Lab Resources

The Lab has a variety of resources for linguistic research, the most used being the equipment for audio recording: the Sound-Isolated Recording Booth, Microphones, and Zoom Recorders. Additionally, we have an Electroglottograph, Static Palatography Kits, an Ultrasound, and an Aerodynamics monitoring setup for laboratory phonetics research. Come in to drop-in hours or book an appointment to borrow,  use, or learn how to use this equipment :)

People

During the 2025-26 school year, the LoL is run by manager Wren Arbor and lab assistants Ezra Scheuermann, Rowan Horowitz, Rives Scherer under the direction of Sameer ud Dowla Khan. You can always email us at laboflinguistics@reed.edu, or via our personal reed emails.

Research

There's always multiple projects going on in the LoL, including senior thesis work, semester-long projects for courses, faculty research, and collaborations between faculty and students. All linguistics students and faculty are welcome to use the lab space for such projects. Some of the long-term faculty-led projects going on right now are listed on our LoL research page.
