Foreword
To the Student and the Teacher

The Pronunciation Guide is intended to serve as a manual for English-speaking students and teachers who require supplementary material on the Russian alphabet and the pronunciation of Russian sounds. The Guide is designed to be used simultaneously with any textbook of first-year Russian.

The Guide is accompanied by an electronic version with audio files for each exercise to make it possible for students to work both independently and under an instructor's guidance. The electronic version corresponds in all respects to the printed version of the manual.

The Guide consists of the following three parts:

  •  Part One offers a system of exercises on the Russian alphabet (how to read Russian letters and their combinations);
  •  Part Two contains exercises that train the student in hearing and reproducing Russian sounds, as well as information about the phonetic system of Russian;
  •  Part Three contains exercises in Russian orthographic conventions.

The Guide includes exercises on the pronunciation of specific sounds, sound combinations, words, phrases, and sentences. Tongue-twisters and verses or verse segments of poetry for children are supplied to assist in the development of correct pronunciation in the normal course of speech.

All Russian words (except for cognates), sentences and poetic texts are accompanied by an English translation. While contemporary textbooks of introductory Russian generally build exercises around cognates, the Guide relies on a predominantly Russian lexicon, so at to give students a fuller understanding of the distinctive features of the phonetic system of Russian.

It is recommended that the work on the phonetics exercises be done in the following order:

1. Listen to the exercise (sounds, sound combinations, words, phrases, tongue twisters, verses).
2. Repeat the text after the recording.
3. Pronounce the words, phrases, verses, etc. simultaneously with the recording.
4. Read the text independently.
5. Read and record the text.
6. Listen to your recording and compare it with the original. If there are mistakes, re-record making the necessary corrections.
7. Discuss any questions and problems with your instructor.

  •  Первая часть представляет собой систему упражнений для работы над русским алфавитом (как читать русские буквы и их сочетания);
  •  Вторая часть включает упражнения для формирования навыков восприятия и произношения русских звуков, а также информацию о русской фонетической системе;

THE RUSSIAN ALPHABET
РУССКИЙ АЛФАВИТ

The Russian alphabet is an adaptation of the old Slavonic alphabet called the Cyrillic whose invention is attributed to St. Cyril (or Constantine the Philosopher) who with his brother St. Methodius made the first translations of Greek Orthodox religious texts into Slavonic in the 860s. Actually, the alphabet elaborated by these two brothers was totally different and was called Glagolitic - Глаголица. Cyrillic - Кириллица - letters have been in use since the early 10th century and it was in this form that the Old Church Slavonic writings were brought to the Russians upon their Christianization in the 10th -11th century A.D.

Transliteration

There are a number of different systems for transliterating the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet into the Latin alphabet. As example, here are two systems: The US Library of Congress transliteration system (LC), and the transliteration system used in The Russian Internet (RI). You can see this system on the MULTITRAN automatic dictionaries website (https://www.multitran.ru).

Your Russian Friends can type e-mails using this system, if they want to chat with you in Russian, but your computer will not be able to read the Cyrillic.

Preliminarily remarks

In speaking about a language or learning a language, we need a clear sense of the following terms:

1. LETTER (letters). A letter is a graphic sign, a unit of the alphabet. We write using letters. Each letter occupies a distinct place in the alphabet and has its own name. For example, the English letters B – «bee», C – «see»; the Russian letters В – «вэ» («ve»), С – «эс» («es»).

2. SOUND (sounds). «Melody», «tone». We hear and produce sounds. Sounds may be either consonantal or vocalic, depending on their acoustic properties. Speech sounds are recorded by means of transcription. For example, the English vocalic sound [i:] (as in «sea»), [ai] (as in «time»); the English consonantal sounds [ks] (as in «box»), [t∫] (as in «church») etc. The Russian vocalic sounds [a] (as in «как»), [и] – [ee] (as in «мир»); the Russian consonantal sounds [ч’] – [ch’] (as in «чай»), [x] – [kh] (as in «хлеб») etc.

3. Sounds are correlated with distinct letters. The following types of correlations may occur:

a) A single letter may indicate a single sound. For example, the English letter D «dee» indicates the sound [d]; the Russian letter Л «эль» («el’») indicates the sound [л], the Russian letter У indicates the sound [у] – [oo];

b) A single letter may indicate a combination of sounds. For example, the Russian letter Ё indicates the sound [jo];

c) A single letter may indicate various sounds. For example, the Russian letter O under stress indicates the sound [o], but not under stress, the reduced sound [a]: ДОМ [ДОМ] (house) and ДОМÁ [ДАМÁ] (houses);

d) A combination of letters may indicate a single sound. For example, in the English word «beach» [bi:t∫], or in the Russian word «боль» [бол’].

4. The following expressions will be used to indicate the letters of the Russian alphabet: vowel letters (or simply "vowels"): А, Е, Ё, И, О, У, Ы, Э, Ю, Я; consonantal letters (or simply "consonants"): Б, В, Г, Д, Ж, З, Й, К, Л, М, Н, П, Р, С, Т, Ф, Х, Ц, Ч, Ш, Щ; soft sign (or simply Ь); hard sign (or simply Ъ).

(In this instance, we adopt the system of A.A. Zaliznyak (See: Zaliznyak, A.A., Russkoe imennoe slovoizmenenie. M., 1967, p. 11).)

* * *

Например, английские гласные звуки [i:] (as in «sea»), [ai] (as in «time»); английские согласные звуки [ks] (as in «box»), [t∫] (as in «church») и др. Русские гласные звуки [a] (as in «как»), [и] (as in «мир»); русские согласные звуки [ч’] (as in «чай»), [х] (as in «хлеб») и др.

3. Буквы фиксируют звуки. При этом могут быть следующие ситуации:

а) Одна буква может обозначать один звук. Например, английская буква D «dee» обозначает звук [d]; русская буква Л «эль» обозначает звук [л], русская буква У обозначает звук [у];

б) Одна буква может обозначать комбинацию звуков. Например, русская буква Ё обозначает звук [jo];

в) Одна буква может обозначать разные звуки. Например, русская буква О под ударением обозначает звук [о], а без ударения редуцированный звук [а]: ДОМ [ДОМ] (house) и ДОМÁ [ДАМÁ] (houses);

М., 1967. С. 11).)

Symbols and abbreviations

The following symbols are used in the Guide:

A (the color green) designates stress. The electronic version of the Guide uses a green letter to indicate stress. Example: АТОМ

[ ] (square brackets). The pronunciation of the word, where necessary, is given between square brackets; normal Russian letters are used to indicate the pronunciation of words on the recording. Specialized symbols for phonetic transcription are not used (in the rare case when they are, these are explained) since students are not expected to know the rules of phonetic transcription.

- to indicate the pronunciation of a part of a word we use square brackets and hyphen. Example: ГАРАЖ [-Ш]. The letter whose pronunciation differs from its conventional value is indicated by bold face.

- to indicate phonetic changes at word boundaries we use square brackets and ellipsis mark. Example: В КЛУБЕ [ФК...].

- a single quotation mark to the right of the letter indicates softening (palatalization) of the preceding consonant. Example: БЮРО [б’уро] или [б’юро].

( ) (parentheses). Parentheses are used to enclose English translations of Russian terms, grammatical explanations, and various types of information about word usage: кон (kitty; in a game) – конь (horse; male).

| | (two vertical lines). Two vertical lines are used to enclose a word parsed into syllables. A hyphen is placed between the syllables. Example: ПРИНТЕР – |ПРИН-ТЕР|.

{ } (curved brackets). Curved brackets are used for transliteration. The Russian Internet transliteration system is used (https://www.multitran.ru). Example: МАШИНА {MASHINA}.

* * *
