Moodle Upgrade Summer 2023

During the summer of 2023, Instructional Technology Services upgraded Moodle from version 3.11 to version 4.1. This update included some major improvements to Moodle, which are outlined below.

Improved in-course navigation

  • One of the most helpful improvements in Moodle 4.1 is the ability for users to collapse or expand all weeks or topics in a Moodle course. This is an especially useful feature for courses with a significant amount of material on the main course page.moodle-expand-sections.png
  • For courses with a topics-based set up, teachers now have the ability to add a new topic section anywhere in the course, rather than having to scroll to the end of the course page.moodle-add-topic.png

Updated look

  • Your course pages will look slightly different in Moodle 4.1, although the basic organization and options you are familiar with remain the same.
  • Moodle 4.1 includes updated icons for activities and resources, which are color-coded by use: red for communication, blue for content, pink for assessment, and green for collaboration.moodle-41-icons.png

New text editor

  • The default text editor has been updated to have a more streamlined look and feel.
  • The text editor features improved media handling, such as the ability to drag and drop images from your computer into the text area.

Updated activity features

  • Moodle 4.1 allows teachers to create timed assignments, so teachers can set timed essay exams while taking advantage of the bulk grading options available in the assignment activity.
  • The question bank for quizzes now saves multiple versions of each question for better version control between quizzes.

In addition to these features, users will notice other, smaller changes to the user interface and activities in Moodle 4.1. We're available to help! Reach us at moodle@reed.edu.
