Vigla Archaeological Field School Program Application

From June 13 to July 12 2026, Prof. Tom Landvatter of the Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies department along with Dr. Brandon Olson of the Metropolitan State University of Denver and Dr. Melanie Godsey of Trinity University will be conducting a season of archaeological excavation at the site of Vigla, a Hellenistic period (ca. 330 - 30 BCE) military fortification outside modern Larnaca on the island of Cyprus. The project will be run as a faculty-led archaeological field school.

Reed students who participate in this archaeological internship program will receive experience and training in archaeological field techniques. We are planning on an approximately four-week season, which will include 6+ hours of work on site most days of the week plus processing of material in the afternoons at the local district museum. On days off, we will be visiting archaeological sites and museums around the island, including the city of Paphos and the Cyprus Museum in the capital of Nicosia. Students do not receive academic credit for this program. For information about the 2019 and 2022-2025 excavation seasons, look at our excavation blog: hhttps://blogs.reed.edu/vigla-archaeological-project/.

If you are interested in participating in the 2026 excavation season, please fill out the application form by 5 pm on December 15, 2025. Interviews with applicants will take place the first week of the spring semester, 2026 (Jan. 26-30). The field school has an associated program fee, not including airfare. If you have further questions, you can contact Dr. Tom Landvatter at landvatt@reed.edu or schedule a meeting with him in person.
