Humanities 110

Introduction to the Humanities

Paper Topics | Fall 2013 | Paper 1

Due Saturday, September 21st, 5 p.m., in your conference leader's Eliot Hall mailbox.
Length: 4-5 double-spaced pages (1,250-1,500 words)

Tablet 1.94-133 of Gilgamesh describes Enkidu's creation and his disruption of the hunter's world. Analyze the representation of the wild in this passage and consider the development and significance of the opposition between the city and the natural world in the larger epic.

This question asks you to start practicing the skills of 'close reading.' As you analyze the passage, pay close attention to the language, examining details such as imagery, diction (word choice), and the use of repetition and think about how the patterns you notice contribute to the meaning of the text as a whole. If you would like additional support, either speak with your conference leader, look at the Reed Writing Center Guide, or set up an appointment with a writing tutor at the Dorothy Johansen House:
