For Counselors

Reed students embrace each new challenge with depth, determination, and—perhaps above all—humor. They report that Reed is a perfect place for students who take the life of the mind seriously, but don’t take themselves too seriously. Traditions such as the pursuit of the Doyle Owl, the end-of-the-semester Stop Making Sense dance party, and the legend of the MG under the library prove the point.

But Reed is most well known for being an intellectual powerhouse. Reed’s core curriculum begins with Humanities 110, a yearlong interdisciplinary course that covers a range of artistic, intellectual, political, and religious strategies that emerged in different geographical and temporal contexts. Students in this shared class bond both socially and intellectually over the fundamental themes of human existence—virtue and justice, good and evil, truth, and free will. And 100 percent of Reedies learn to undertake intensive research, culminating in the senior thesis.

Organizing a Group Visit

Reed welcomes visits from school counselors, independent counselors, and CBO advisors year-round.

For groups of students from high schools or from educational organizations serving high school populations, we offer information sessions and tours outside our regularly scheduled events on a limited basis. Requests for group reservations are approved only if we have availability and only if a request has been made with at least three weeks notice. We welcome students in grades 9–12 and junior college groups.

  • We cannot accommodate junior high, middle school, or graduated student groups.
  • Groups of no more than 20 students can be accommodated during the spring semester (excluding April) and in summer.
  • Groups of no more than 40 students can be accommodated during the fall semester.
  • We do not offer group visits during winter break nor during the month of April.
  • All groups must provide one adult chaperone for every 10 students.
