Reed senior Alexander Jordan ‘01 has been awarded a Fulbright fellowship. Jordan, a mathematics major, plans to study Hungarian and graduate-level mathematics in Budapest, Hungary.

Alex Jordan, of Eugene, Oregon, will spend his summer teaching English in the Slovak villages of Recsk, Vrbova Nad Vahom, and Chotin. In September he intends to study mathematics in Budapest, as well as fully immerse himself in the Hungarian language. His main goal for the year is to master the language and become a fluent speaker. To help him learn, he plans to live with a non-English speaking family. After his year abroad, Jordan expects to further pursue his studies at the University of Oregon.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Fulbright’s American Scholar Program sends nearly 700 scholars and professionals each year to more than 100 countries, where they lecture or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Fulbright fellows are selected on the basis of their academic qualifications and potential, in addition to their ability and willingness to share ideas and experiences with people of diverse cultures.
