FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WINTER CONCERT FEATURES CHORAL AND ORCHESTRAL WORKS
The Reed Collegium Musicum, chorus, and chamber orchestra, directed by faculty members David Schiff and Virginia Hancock, will present a joint winter concert on Sunday, December 3, at 8 p.m. in Reed's Kaul Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Reed events hotline at 503/777-7755.
The chamber orchestra, conducted by David Schiff, will play the overture to Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio and Corelli's Christmas Concerto with soloists Margo Meyer ’04, Alison Grande ’04, and Clark Matthews ’04. The orchestra will also accompany the Reed chorus in selected choruses and chorales from Bach's Christmas Oratorio. The Collegium Musicum, directed by Virginia Hancock, will sing a variety of works on the theme of "peace on earth," ranging from Gregorian chant to David Schiff's "Peace" for choir, organ, and flute, with flutist Allison Hornor ’00 and organist Bonnie Garrett, director of Reed's private music program.
This concert marks the first public appearance of Reed's new chamber organ, completed by Bond Organ Builders of Portland in September 2000. It has a single manual and no pedals, and thus can be moved easily for performances in different locations. The Baroque-style organ is designed primarily for continuo playing. The college's acquisition of this new organ was made possible by a gift in memory of Pat Roth from Reed trustee Sukey Roth Garcetti ’61 and the Roth Family Foundation.
