ALLISON MITCHELL '00 & EMILIA OLSON '00 WIN FULBRIGHTS

Reed students Allison Mitchell Â’00 and Emilia Sue Olson Â’00 have been awarded Fulbright fellowships. Mitchell plans to study French and Arabic in Tunis, Tunisia; Olson will study crystallography at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany.

Allison Mitchell, who graduated from West Morris Central High School in Chester, New Jersey, will also be conducting independent research on Tunisian film. She double majored in English literature and philosophy, writing two separate theses on literary modernism and fictional discourse. She was active in the college community, serving as a member of the student judicial board, a house adviser in the dormitories, and a tutor in the writing center. Mitchell plans to pursue an academic career in philosophy and eventually practice international law.

Emilia Olson, who is from Salem, Oregon, majored in physics at Reed; she performed her senior thesis research on evanescent wave microscopy at Oregon Health Sciences University, under the direction of W. Almers and Reed professor Johnny Powell. Olson is a senior reactor operator on ReedÂ’s TRIGA 3 reactor, as well as a member of ReedÂ’s string quartet and a volunteer at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. After her Fulbright year, Olson plans to pursue an M.D./Ph.D., with an emphasis in biophysics.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." FulbrightÂ’s American Scholar Program sends nearly 700 scholars and professionals each year to more than 100 countries, where they lecture or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Fulbright fellows are selected on the basis of their academic qualifications and potential, plus their ability and willingness to share ideas and experiences with people of diverse cultures.
