Subject: Welcome to Tony Boston, Interim Dean for Institutional Diversity

December 2, 2021

Dear Reed faculty, staff, and students,

As previously communicated, Mary James, Dean for Institutional Diversity and A.A. Knowlton Professor of Physics, is stepping down from her position as dean at the end of the calendar year. Mary will be greatly missed in this role.

A national search for a new Dean for Institutional Diversity will be launched soon, and I will share more details about that in the near future.

Today I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tony Boston as Interim Dean for Institutional Diversity. Tony’s first day will be January 3, 2022.

Tony BostonTony comes to Reed from Pomona College where he has served most recently as Special Advisor to the President, and Senior Associate Dean for Diversity. As the Special Advisor, Tony’s work focused on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, student experience, and academic equity.

Since 2008 Tony has held various leadership positions at Pomona, including Associate Dean for Research Administration, Accreditation Liaison Officer, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, Associate Professor of Physical Education, and Head Coach of the Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams. As a faculty member, Tony has served on the Teaching and Learning Committee, President’s Advisory Committee on Diversity, the Grievance and Harassment Committee, and the Faculty Executive Committee. He has provided leadership in Pomona’s assessment of campus climate, equity-minded hiring practices, enhancing community and belonging, and mentoring academic cohorts.

Tony is an experienced diversity officer, who cares deeply about expanding access and inclusivity. I look forward to introducing you to Tony after winter break, and I hope you will join me in welcoming him to Reed.

With gratitude,

Audrey
