Subject: Violence in Washington, D.C.

January 6, 2021

Dear students, faculty, and staff,

I write to you from campus, where I am watching the news of what is happening in Washington, DC. Protesters have forced the US Capitol into lockdown as Congress was meeting to certify 2020 election results. The violence that has been unleashed is terrifying, and I imagine many of you are watching in horror like me.

As a person who deeply respects participatory democracy and those who serve, I am concerned by what we are witnessing. I condemn the violence in the strongest terms. While I believe the guardrails of our democracy will hold, this insurrection is a disgrace.

I care about how you may be affected right now. During this time of upheaval, it is essential that we all practice self care and watch out for one other. Please know I am thinking of you as I hope for a peaceful resolution to this situation.

With care and concern,

Audrey
