Subject: New Board of Trustees Chair

Dear Reed community,
At this past weekend’s Reed College Board of Trustees meeting Deborah D. Kamali ’85 was elected as Reed’s next board chair. Effective July 1, 2024, she will succeed Roger Perlmutter ’73, who has served as chair since 2010.
Deborah, who is originally from Portland and who will be the first woman to serve as board chair at Reed, brings a wealth of experience and a love of Reed College. She is an emerita professor at the University of California, San Francisco where she was a physician in the department of obstetrics and gynecology. Many of you may know Deborah, her husband Kevan Shokat ’86, or their children, Kasra Shokat ’14, Mitra Shokat ’18, and Leila Shokat ’21.
Roger has done an extraordinary job over the past 14 years, and it has been a privilege to benefit from his knowledge and wisdom during my time here. Upon concluding his service as chair, he will remain on the board.
