Dear faculty and staff,

With deep sadness, I write to let you know that Dan Greenberg ’62 has passed away. For those who didn’t know him, Daniel “Dan” Greenberg served for a remarkable 45 years as a member of the Reed College Board of Trustees, from 1975 to 2020, including as board chair from 2002 to 2010. He was honored with emeritus trustee status in 2020. Dan joined the board at a very challenging time in Reed’s history, and his support and guidance can be felt throughout the college. It was Dan’s leadership as board chair, and his philanthropy with his spouse, Susan Steinhauser, that launched Reed’s most ambitious fundraising campaign, which attracted donations totalling more than $200 million.

My thoughts are with Susan and Dan’s family, friends, and trustee colleagues during this difficult time. We will take time to remember Dan for his dedication to the college and his enthusiasm for its academic mission. For today, I will remember him for the kindness he showed me during my transition to Reed and for his boundless energy and intelligence.

Reed is a better place because of Dan Greenberg. Let us hold his memory close.

With a heavy heart,

Audrey
