How to Study Abroad
If you are considering studying abroad, here is how to make it happen!
1. Meet with your academic adviser and create an eight-semester plan.
Review your proposed eight-semester plan(s) and think about whether you want to take classes abroad towards your major and/or your group requirements. Set up a meeting with your academic adviser to discuss study abroad scheduling opportunities. You do not need to decide where to go yet, but your adviser may be able to discuss programs that are relevant to your major/language study.
2. Meet with a student study abroad adviser to learn more about the process.
The international program office (IPO) has student study abroad advisers who have been through the process themselves and can help you figure it out. You can make an appointment or drop by their office in Eliot 101B. Someone is typically available most weekdays, but if you miss them, their office hours are posted on the office door.
3. Investigate programs.
Based on your academic and personal goals, you can begin to investigate options by perusing the Reed-approved programs' database for inspiration.
4. Meet with Alberto del Río Malo, director of international programs.
Once you have an idea of the program(s) you are interested in, fill out the Off-Campus Study Program Interest Form and schedule a meeting with Alberto in Eliot 422. He can help you hone your choices and navigate all of the logistics of studying abroad.
5. Complete all required applications.
Be sure to complete and return all of the application forms, send them to their appropriate destinations, and ensure that the IPO has been informed of each step to secure your spot in the off-campus program that you have chosen.
Materials
- Transcripts: When you submit your IPO application, you authorize Reed College to release your academic transcript to officials of the study abroad or off-campus study program to which you are applying. If your study abroad program application allows you to submit an unofficial transcript, you can download one from the documents tab in the student information area of IRIS.
- Passport: Apply several months in advance for a new passport. If you already have one, it should be valid for at least six months after you return home, depending on your destination.
- Visas: You may need to get a visa before you travel to a foreign destination. Contact the embassy or consulate of the countries you will be visiting for more information.
