How to Rent FAQ

What steps do I take if I am interested in renting a house or apartment from the college?
Email Matthew Packwood (mpackwood@reed.edu) to put your name on the list of potential renters. Placing your name on the list does not bind you to renting from the college.
When are housing decisions made and how?
Typically housing decisions are made by mid-May. You will receive an email notifying you that there is a house available if you are still interested. At that time you may confirm your intention or remove your name from the list.
Will I be asked to sign a lease?
Yes, you will receive a simple lease agreement that includes the amount of monthly rent and basic details about your lease including an agreed-upon move-in date.
Are there any penalties for breaking a lease?
In the event you wish to break your lease prior to its ending date (e.g., you buy a house), you will be charged the full month's rent for the final month during which you vacate.
Am I required to pay a security or damage deposit?
No, however, you will be asked to reimburse the college for any damages requiring repairs other than normal maintenance.
How do I pay my rent?
Payment in advance will be made by payroll deduction. Payroll deductions will begin with your September 30 paycheck (October rent), and the final deduction will be made from your May 31 paycheck (June rent).
When can I move in?
Move in dates vary slightly and are negotiated when you confirm your intention to rent a house. Typically houses become available August 1st.
Are the houses furnished?
The houses are generally unfurnished. Some houses may come with a few pieces of furniture such as a dining table, bookcase, or dresser.
Who pays which utilities?
The college provides garbage, heat, water and electricity. You will be responsible to pay for your phone, cable and internet service.
What major appliances are provided?
Each house comes with all major appliances including a washer and dryer.
Who takes care of the yard?
The college provides regular yard maintenance.
Are pets allowed?
Yes. Note: repairs for damages caused by pets will be charged to the renter.
Is smoking allowed?
We want you to feel that your house is your home but we ask that if you or your guests smoke they do so outside.
