Selection is based on four criteria:
Academic excellence, with the ability to make a significant contribution to an academic discipline
Leadership potential, demonstrating a clear ability to lead
A commitment to improving the lives of others and working for the greater good
A good academic fit with Cambridge. It is important that you can make a convincing argument for doing a particular postgraduate degree at Cambridge.
Applicants apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to their chosen postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge and a Cambridge College via the Graduate Admissions Office, using the GRADSAF form and supporting documents. They must also provide transcripts and recommendations. Some departments may have additional requirements, such at GRE scores, writing samples, or research proposals.
