Campus Announcements

Winter weather possible this week

Update on February 14, 2021 via email to students, staff, and faculty:

Due to icy conditions, we have made the decision to cancel COVID-19 surveillance testing tomorrow, Monday, February 15. Individuals signed up for a testing appointment for Monday will receive a message from SignUp Genius with instructions on how to arrange a make-up test. We anticipate testing will resume as normal at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16.

At this time the college remains OPEN with modified operations. Closure of the campus is rare, and we maintain all essential services for residential students and staff at all times. We will update Reed.edu's homepage by 5:30 a.m. tomorrow if the college needs to make the call to close or delay. This being said, department directors and faculty have the authority to close or delay their departments or cancel classes during inclement weather.

We remind students, if you are in distress, contact the care team. If you have an emergency that involves an imminent risk of harm to self or others, please call Reed Community Safety at 503-788-6666 or call 911.

Be safe,

Update on February 13, 2021 via email to students, staff, and faculty:

Good morning,

We hope that you are all safe and warm amidst what is a big snow and ice event in our area. If you are in distress, contact the care team. If you have an emergency that involves an imminent risk of harm to self or others, please call Reed Community Safety at 503-788-6666 or call 911.

Snow has impacted campus operations. The ERT team is meeting to respond, and we will continue to provide information on any changes to the campus schedule.

The tents erected for both teaching and gatherings are now unstable or have collapsed. It may be some time before these tents can be reassembled. Classes that are scheduled for tents have all been reassigned to indoor locations, and Commons does have limited indoor seating for those who would like to take advantage of that.

Due to TriMet service interruptions, Commons is operating with limited staff. Brunch and dinner service will not be interrupted, but will likely be slowed and online options may be limited.

Thanks for your patience and please be careful, getting to and around campus may be challenging during inclement weather. The Trimet website includes information on snow routes for those who use public transportation.

Be safe,

Emergency Response Team

Update on February 12, 2021 via Reed homepage:

Winter storm watch for the Portland metro in effect this week. The college is currently OPEN, but COVID-19 testing is cancelled for Friday. Additionally, individual faculty and offices may make alternative arrangements as they deem appropriate. This alert was updated February 12, 2021 at 8:30 a.m.

Also, please note that Bon Appétit has adjusted hours of operation due to today's inclement weather: Commons Café and the Marketplace will close at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, February 12.

Update on February 9, 2021 via email to students, staff and faculty:

Weather forecasts for the Portland metro area predict snow is possible on Wednesday night and likely Thursday through Sunday of this week. We remind the community that Reed's inclement weather protocols are summarized on this web page

Due to the residential nature of our college, the decision to stay open, delay, or close during inclement weather affects many people. At this time, the college expects to remain OPEN; however, department directors and faculty have the authority to close or delay their departments or cancel classes during inclement weather.

Closure of the campus is rare, and we maintain all services for residential students and staff at all times. We make every effort to post an open, delayed, or closed notice on Reed.edu's homepage by 5:30 a.m. whenever there is an inclement weather advisory. Local news stations are also notified.

ALL:

  • BE PREPARED: Getting to and around campus may be a challenge during inclement weather. For information on preparedness, visit the American Red Cross Winter Storm Safety website. Everyone's individual circumstances are different. Everyone must use care and their best judgment when deciding whether to travel to, around, or from campus, regardless of the college's decision to open, close, or delay.
  • COVID-19 TESTING: Weekly surveillance testing will continue as scheduled unless the campus is closed. In the event of a delay, surveillance testing will begin at the time the college opens.
  • FOOD SERVICE: We expect Commons hours and operations to remain the same during inclement weather, regardless of Reed being open or closed. If the hours of operation need to be altered under extreme circumstances, the new hours will be pushed out via the mobile app and posted on the Bon Appetit website.

STUDENTS: Unless communicated otherwise by the college, students should direct questions about classes during inclement weather to faculty.

STAFF: Staff members should direct any questions to their supervisors or human resources. Some staff positions are considered essential during inclement weather because their responsibilities include non-deferrable services that must be performed to support those living on campus and other essential work. Staff in essential positions may be asked to work on campus or via remote access during inclement weather. When the college is open during inclement weather, staff members who have circumstances that prevent travel should discuss those circumstances with their supervisors.

Be safe and enjoy the snow!
