Why Take English Courses at Reed College?

A Range of Courses

The study of English encompasses many literatures and traditions. In addition to learning to analyze the complex meanings, formal structures, historical contexts, and inter-relationships of the texts you read, you will have the opportunity to take courses that represent a long and varied literary tradition, including the short story, novel, epic, poetry, drama, cinema, fiction, and graphic narrative. Take a seminar on James Joyce, study the novel in Africa, or enroll in the American Pastoral.

Our Creative Writing Concentration

We offer creative writing courses that all Reed students are encouraged to take. Hone your craft and experiment with new ways of writing while also participating in a larger writing community. Classes are taught as writing workshops by practicing writers.

Analyzing Tone of Voice in Poetry

To analyze tone of voice in Elizabeth Bishop's poetry, a particularly tricky endeavor, English major Kelly Wenzka ’22 consulted experts in a range of fields, including linguistics, psychology, philosophy, and sociology. Her adviser, Lisa M. Steinman, Emerita Kenan Professor of English and Humanities, nominated her thesis for the John Gregory Unrue ’84 Memorial Award.
