Sociolinguistic Artifacts

This video is from a Daily Show. The speaker is Trevor Noah, who is one of my favorite comedians. He has a diverse cultural background and experience with different kinds of languages and accents. This video is related to our class discussion because it interacts with the following ideas: -> Good English is a social proxy that is usually connected to whiteness. -> L1 accent: How we evaluate the different lexical choices based on our assumptions of the represented ethnic identity -> The responsibility of communication: whether listeners have the necessity to understand and learn others' accents -> Individuals change the way they speak depending on their surroundings -> L2 Accent: how we connect our ideology about the countries to our interpretation of their accent (German, France, Arab, South Africa)
