Matthew Ford is a behavioral pharmacologist with a passion for exploring therapeutic candidates for the treatment of substance use disorders.  He earned his doctorate in pharmacology from Wake Forest University School of Medicine (2002) and subsequently trained as a fellow in behavioral neuroscience at Oregon Health & Science University. His NIH-funded research has centered on interactions between neuroactive steroids and behavioral effects of alcohol (AA015234), receptor-based mechanisms of alcohol and nicotine polysubstance abuse (AA016849), and gene therapy for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AA024757). He enjoys engaging with students to address research questions involving brain mechanisms of behavior in animal models. His course offerings include Behavioral Neuroscience (PSY 333), Psychopharmacology (PSY 338) and Psychedelics & Mental Health (PSY 253).
