Goldwater Scholarship Internal Application Instructions
This scholarship requires applicants to be nominated by Reed College. Complete the internal application in order to compete for a nomination from the college. Nomination decisions will be made by the Reed faculty Fellowships & Awards Committee.
For the internal application, you will use the online application on the Goldwater website and have two of your recommenders send internal letters of recommendation to CLBR Fellowships via email. The online application is done in two sections: first, a pre-application which you'll fill out early on, and then the full online application which will be due by the internal deadline. Review the Goldwater Foundation website for more details about the application. Once you have a chance to look through the materials, and have a better sense of what you want to know, please contact CLBR Fellowships or Reed's faculty Goldwater liaison with any questions.

Application Steps (revised for 2021)
Do this well before the internal application deadline:
Fill out and submit the online Student Profile and Pre-application on the Goldwater website.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know you've submitted the Pre-application.
- CLBR Fellowships will review your Pre-application. If we have any questions for you, we'll reach out to you by email. Otherwise we'll approve your Pre-application which will then give you access to the rest of the application.
Complete the following steps by the internal application deadline to apply:
Complete and submit the online application which consists of the online questionnaire and your research essay.
Email these items to email@example.com by the internal application deadline:
Letters of Recommendation
For the internal application, you will need two internal letters of recommendation.
- The two recommenders may be from Reed; at least one of the two should be from someone who has served as a research mentor for you. Your recommenders do not have to be from the same people you initially identified in your Pre-application. Please ask the two recommenders to send their internal letters of recommendation to firstname.lastname@example.org by the internal application deadline. Ask them to discuss your potential for a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Make sure to read the guidance for Letters of Recommendation (under step 4) on the Goldwater website.
- If you are nominated, you will need a third recommender.
You will need to complete this online waiver form as the final step in submitting your internal application.
Applicants submitting application materials electronically by email will generally receive a confirmation within twenty-four hours. If you do not receive a confirmation during this time, please follow up with the Center for Life Beyond Reed at email@example.com to ensure that the application was successfully submitted.
The Reed fellowships and awards committee will meet the week after the internal application deadline, and notifications should be made by the end of that week. Reed College may nominate up to four applicants (five if at least one nominee is a transfer student). If you are nominated by Reed, you'll be notified by email and your application will be unsubmitted in the online portal so that you may continue to work on it until the national deadline.
