“Hearing Shapes: An ERP Study of Sensory Substitution”

The ability of the human brain to adapt to sensory loss has been used as an example of neural plasticity. We report preliminary findings of a study investigating brain plasticity in intact individuals by recording the brain activity elicited by auditory and visual stimuli before and after participants were trained to identify visual shape information via sound. Our goal is to demonstrate the time course of neural activity in visual and auditory areas involved in shape processing modulated by cross-modal brain plasticity.
