“Right on Cue: ERP Correlates of Processing Alcohol and Food Images”

It has been suggested that both alcohol addiction and obesity are associated with dysfunction in brain circuits involved in reward processing and cognitive control. Furthermore, alterations in neurocognitive processes involved in attending to self-relevant, self-salient environmental cues (e.g., sights or smells) may be of particular importance in both disorders. This talk will present data from three studies examining the event-related potential (ERP) correlates of viewing distracting food or alcoholic beverage cues in several populations including individuals with alcoholism, college-aged binge drinkers, and individuals who may be more likely to engage in impulsive eating. Across studies, we found that processing salient cues (e.g. food vs. nonfood, alcoholic beverage vs. nonalcoholic beverage) elicits dissociable patterns of cortical activity and that the magnitude of these effects appears to be related to a number of clinical, psychological, and cognitive variables.
