Studies in German Theory I: Ideology and Imagination

Full course for one semester. This class explores Romantic conceptions of poetic imagination and their importance for twentieth century debates about art and politics. We will focus on the relationship between literary and philosophical argument and on the implications of literary theory for Marxist discussion of ideology. Authors include Kant, Schlegel, Kleist, Marx, Brecht, Freud, Benjamin and Adorno. Conducted in English. Students taking the course for German credit will meet in extra sessions. Conference.
