Proposal Overview

The Fannie Kenin Friedman Japanese-American Studies Summer Research Grant seeks to promote the study of Japanese American history, literature, society or similar topics specifically relevant to Americans of Japanese descent.  This grant will support research conducted during the summer break between spring and fall semesters.  Research awards will total $3,500 for a minimum of ten weeks of fulltime engagement with the research project, plus an additional $500 in funds for budgeted travel, research materials or similar research expenses.  Applicants must maintain a regular advising schedule with a faculty adviser, who will receive $1,000 for that assistance.

 

Proposals for this summer research grant will be judged on their relevance to Japanese American studies, the importance of the proposed research topic, and the strength of the research approach and methodology.  Applicants must also justify the relevance of their proposed summer research to their own academic program.  When designing the research project and composing the proposal, applicants are encouraged to consult with a faculty member whose scholarly or teaching interests involves some aspect of Japanese American studies.

 

Eligibility

With the exception of graduating seniors, all students currently enrolled at Reed College are eligible to apply.  Students may apply to multiple grant opportunities, but the successful applicant may not hold this grant together with another fellowship, grant or internship.

 

Application process

Submission deadline for Summer 2018 grants:  Friday, March 2, 2018.

 

Application materials must include the following items:

1.     A research proposal that summarizes the topic and research question(s) you intend to examine.  The proposal should articulate the significance of the research topic and question(s), and describe in detail the methodology and approach to be taken, as well as the type of data to be gathered, materials to be read and analyzed, community to be studied, or similar research content. (1500 word limit)

 

2.     Letter of support for your research from a Reed faculty member, who will be designated as your project adviser.  Applicants are responsible for informing the potential project adviser of the grant expectation that the successful applicant will receive regular adviser assistance during the ten-week summer project.

 

3.     A current resume.

 

4.     If the topic of study involves research on human subjects, applicants must also insure that their research proposal will be approved by the Institutional Review Board.

Successful proposals will be announced by April 1, 2018.
