“Talking the Talk: The Role of Group-Based Emotion in Strategic Intergroup Communication”

The emotions we feel as group members are an important component of intergroup relations, for good or ill. However, research on group-based emotion has tended to focus on the hostile and destructive consequences that negative emotions, such as anger, can engender. By contrast, this talk will focus on research investigating how positive group-based emotions are shaped by and promote strategic intergroup communications such as apology and competitive victimhood. I will present data suggesting that positive emotions such as pride and respect can be vital components of such communications, at times trumping the importance of more classically studied emotions in their ability to explain the responses of victims of intergroup conflict. The goal of this research is to enhance our understanding of the means by which intergroup reconciliation can be achieved via an intergroup emotions approach.
