The mission of SEEDS (Students for Education, Empowerment, and Direct Service) is to connect Reed students, faculty, staff, and alumni with the broader community in an effort to work towards effecting positive social change. The SEEDS mission is carried out through facilitating links to the community in a variety of ways. SEEDS provides resources on nonprofit agencies locally, nationally, and internationally.

Every year SEEDS sponsors at least five student-created and student-led partnerships with local schools and nonprofit organizations. These partnerships provide an opportunity for students to volunteer on a regular basis with other Reedies as well as meet with each other during the year to discuss the social issues they encounter at the volunteer site. We work with individual students to connect them with both short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities with community agencies that align with their interests We sponsor forums for discussion on issues of concern in the Portland community. We organize and promote group service projects, including Alternative Break Service Projects and Saturday service projects, that give students a chance to work together, build leadership skills, and gain exposure to various community agencies and the work they are doing.

In partnership with the Offices of Financial Aid and Career Services, SEEDS also manages the off-campus community service Federal Work Study (FWS) program. This program allows students who receive FWS as part of their financial aid package to earn it in paying internships off-campus at local school, government office and non-profit organizations serving the Portland community. Whether you’re interested in volunteering to tutor in local public schools, restore the environment, work with survivors of domestic violence, or other issues, there are many opportunities to get involved.
