Augustus and Family

Via Labicana Augustus

Because hundreds of photographs of portraits of Augustus are available in print and on the web, I include here only the statue most similar to the relief of Augustus on the Ara Pacis. Although the figure as a whole is of ordinary quality, the head is one of the fnest of all portraits of Augustus, exceptionally refined. The statue was found in 1910 in the Via Labicana and is now in the Palazzo Massimo ale Terme, Rome.
